Smith says after surveillance video ran on FOX 2 last Friday, tips came in leading investigators to a female Detroit police officer - who is now facing a misdemeanor for the crime.
“It’s really disappointing on a lot of levels,” Smith said. “You hear dine and dashes from kids in high school doing this, maybe college, but not law enforcement doing something like this.”
The day after FOX 2’s story aired - someone came to Sagano and paid that big bill saying to restaurant staff that they were a ‘friend’ of the party who walked out.
It turns out, Smith says - it was the DPD officer herself.
The “friend” was a female police officer who was part of the group.

The officer and another woman in the group are facing a 90-day misdemeanor. They are expected to be in court Thursday.
Detroit police have launched an internal investigation and put that officer on restricted, no gun status.
I'll still give her even odds of keeping her job (possibly with some suspension, fine and/or community service) given the environment.
In WHAT world is it OK to do this?

A new Chinese buffet opened up. After a couple of days they posted signs on their doors to the effect of “We have hidden cameras in the restaurant and the parking lot, if you leave without paying we will turn over video to police department”. Only restaurant in town that I know of that has such a sign. They must have been burned in their first few days of operation. Asians take business very seriously, it is one reason they tend to be successful.
Diners in Philly make you pay after your order, then the order goes to the kitchen.

It looks like a Benihana-type place, where the chef slices and grills a flank steak, a couple of chicken breasts and a pound of shrimp at the table, and flips the pieces onto their platesful of rice.
I’d imagine it was someone sent to cover for them once they realized they were likely to get identified and charged otherwise.
Old-time city cops, for the implied protection of shopkeepers, used to grab an apple from an outdoor fruit stand or maybe cadge a donut, but this is ridiculous.
No. I’m not a thief. I’d chase somebody down to pay them.
But, if they didn’t come up with a bill, I would leave.
