Alfred E. Neumann even had a hit song in the late 60's,
It's a Gas!

Mad fold in
The Fold ins were created by Al Jaffee, he's still alive at 98.

When political humor seemed to work, MAD doubled down on lampooning the Trump administration, which earned some critical praise but likely alienated conservative readers... Ah, what a pity. Who did they think were buying their magazine?

Get the anthologies of 60s and 70s issues. You can still get the old paperbacks.
I had some very worn, dog eared copies i had in my youth. And they're somewhere in the attic of my mother's home... unless she threw them way(They were "trash' in her opinion but she and Pop still let me keep them)
I really enjoy the reprints of the early EC "vault of horror' satires. I'm afraid thes paperback books were printed on very cheap pulp and yellowed then browned very quickly so they would crumbled if i turned a page. But they were funny.. at least to a twelve year old me(grins)

Impressive that it outlived Cracked by 12 years. Meanwhile comic books featuring protagonists in skintight rubber costumes continue to be big. Go figure.

The Democratic Party crowded them out of the absurdity-for-laughs market.

Ah, what a pity. Who did they think were buying their magazine?
Saw an "online" version of "Mad" as well as "Cracked"
Both had "diversified" into having advertising, color panels and, well, really stupid jokes(think lots of "bodily function' humour) Classic "Mad" had a few "low brow' humour but it was more innuendo and double entrdre. As well as scantily drawn women with cleavage and beautiful actresses in barely there lingerie.(did I say I was a teenage boy back then?)
Mort Drucker was alway a great read and drawings were well drawn.
But their raper like witt was replaced with crude, cudgel that beat the "humour" into one's skull. And didn't jab the liberals as much and as often as any conservative. Needless to say I didn't renew my subscription nor visit the long now shuttered paper stand. Like the non nude version of Playboy, Madd won't be missed by me or me brothers

Babylon Bee is the funniest site on the planet, IMHO.

That reminds me of their take-off the the poem, "The Barefoot Boy"by John Greenleaf Whittier:
The Barefoot Fink
Pox upon thee little fellow
barefoot fink with stripe of yellow.
The gang you squealed on has the urge
to sing and strum your funeral dirge
In the drink you should have went
neatly cased in wet cement.
Delinquancy can be a blight
when finks like you don't do it right.
To look at you I hate to think
that I was once a barefoot fink.

I don’t think it’s that at all. Young people just don’t buy magazines. And how many decent humor sites are on the Internet? Maybe a thousand.
Mad magazine is just a victim of the times.

The net destroys another. It’s a new world, the internet has changed everything and I don’t know if that’s so good. I think it has made people especially young democrats, very vicious as they are growing up in an environment where the internet has given them what THEY want instantly, and when they don’t get what they want instantly in the real world they freak out.

Political correctness, which stems from Socialism has turned societies youth into a bunch of thought police recruits who shame each other for contrary opinions. Making fun of anything isn’t tolerated any more and their hatred for those who oppose or challenge their ‘correctness’ is annoying beyond belief. So the demise of MAD isn’t all that surprising... It’s a sign of the times.
You didn’t need to be a genius to enjoy MAD magazine, but it did have a cerebral quality and having an eye for skepticism and a sense of humour helped out... Today’s youth are apparently incapable of seeing the humor in anything.
I’m not sure if it’s the fault of our Education systems or maybe it’s our mistake, but today’s youth are obsessed with taking everything they see and hear far too seriously... Their main concerns are being sensitive towards everything and each other and of course, global warming.
Maybe our constant fear of Nuclear annihilation made us more sensible and hearty. The sad part... That fear should still be there and it certainly remains there for me. Global warming is the least of our worries.
So long Alfred E. Neuman... You will be missed.
