“Joke was the freaks liked it because it showed how evil rednecks are. Rednecks liked it because it had a happy ending.”
I think your statement is profound.
Watched Easy Rider on the 298th Signal company outside
screen.Think home movie size screem in `71.Every one in the
company came out that nite I bet.It was a really big deal
back then.It was a nice break from the war.
Never saw it again or wanted to.
Thanks, man. Heroin & marijuana were hitting us hard in 1971, s*** from the Golden Triangle. Freaks were doing dope & getting nailed in urinalysis (it all started then). They popped hot just to get sent back to the world but wound up in LBJ (Long Binh Jail) instead.
We’d get done flying & head for the club, little airconditioned shack. Long as you got smashed every night it proved you weren’t a doper. Attendance was mandatory & as long as you were up at oh-dark-thirty to preflight your A/C & make your takeoff it was OK.
We were young & crazy so mox nix.
Then I got deployed at age 55 in 2003, CWO older than dirt. P***ed me off no end to get in theater and NO alcohol. Court martial offense as bad as drugs.
For health & welfare? Oh hell no, it was so we wouldn’t offend the Muslims. Ironic since this was Uzbekistan where locals traded us vodka for Playboys (also verboten).
Retired now but it was fun times.

Holy cow! Were you a CWO after you hit Islamshitstan in 2003 or did you earn the rank before? Most CWOs I knew were WW II guys. And being deployed at age 55 most have raised a few complaints amongst your bones.
Would be fun to drink a beer with you.
Best wishes to you and yours. Semper fi!
They never flew hang gliders.
Pussies.
He was talking about wasting their lives using drugs and dropping out man.
You are absolutely right. Peta would have turned 1 in '71.
Geez, compared to now I was in great shape at 55 with APFT requirement. Up at 0500 for PT. There was a photo then in Army Times showing Vietnam vets serving in OIF/OEF. Average age 55. Most of them still on flight status.
Stayed in the reserves until age 62 when I hit MRD. Enjoying retirement ever since.
Beer is good for the soul I have discovered.
Best to you and yours. God bless the Marines!
LOL
Must of been thinking of the college sport of drag racing.
Or Tulane could’ve had a street ball team.
;-)
200 not 2000....................
Here’s my take. The whole movie is a parable, and every character is like an archetype. Nicholson’s character shared their ideals, but unlike Hopper and Fonda he wasn’t dealing drugs to fund his own pursuit of happiness. He might have been a drunk, but he wasn’t cheating.
So his death is the “death of innocence”. His death represents the death of the childlike idealism of that generation, as they become jaded and hedonistic.
I hate movies that have to be some kind of ‘message’.
As Sam Goldwyn once quipped, “If you want to send a message, use Western Union.”................
Don’t you just love a happy ending?
