Most often referred to as a “sub-hilt” handle...Opinions are mixed as to the utility of the secondary guard...
Some have claimed it facilitates a “snap cut” using the first two fingers on the handle, and others claim greater retention of the knife when handle is wet with sweat and/or blood...
Don’t see them much if at all on historical knives suggesting to me limited utility...I occasionally get a request for this type handle, but don’t make’em...
But if executed well they do look cool, and I’ve heard the Klingons love ‘em...
The sad part was where he broke down and cried about being so technically good in ‘Nam that all he could do was work in a car wash or something at home; flew choppers and the like.

Back in the ‘70’s, there was a single seat, very small helicopter kit being sold...If I remember correctly, it was about $5,000...I almost bought one to try to fly back and forth to work...

I’m not allowed to see Rambo movies since I burst out laughing and calling bs in a theater when Rambo whatever # pulled the helicopter out of the sky.
I don’t have the specifics on it but I bet it’s out there on the internet under “How To Kill Yourself Heroically” nonetheless I want one!!!!!
