Dining Car 1952
We've come a long way.
A private company that is propped up by the taxpayer with Congressional oversight.
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/amtrak-lost-800m-on-cheeseburgers-and-soda
No train on those tracks is going 100mph, much less 160mph
I’ve road to DC, Manhattan and Boston from Wilmington.
It’s about 110 miles Wilmington to DC and it takes about the same time to go by train as it does by car: 1 hour/30 minutes...
Do the math
Same reason a bar will charge $5 for a beer. To keep the undesirables away.
But really. I can charter a plane and fly Memphis to Minneapolis for the same price as a 28 hour Amtrak trip, in 3.5 hours.
Amtrak runs 35 to 40 MPH traveling Memphis to Chicago.
That price tag makes each new Acela trainset about as expensive as a new F-35 fighter jet.
Stopping in every tiny burg along the way, slows the train down making going by car faster n cheaper.
waste of time and money
the track right of ways are limitng and in poor condition
Best long term people movers?
large comfortable buses like the interstate private bus companies.
Have you taken a long trip on the Eastern seaboard Amtrack?
Like Ny to Orlando?
Not a pretty sight.
and the crimes on trains is significant.
Amtrak is one of the centers of black middle class success. it will not be defunded
that is why focusing on high speed bus lanes in existing mv routes makes much more sense.
You can put your tax dollars into a roadbed boondoggle. the country is too big to cover with new rail beds and new routes.
The trackage wont permit the high speeds because freight trains use the same right of way.
Also I think its sad that most rail cars are built overseas not here.
The extremely subsidized by taxpayers Acella ISN’T high speed. It is a fraud and boondoggle . Look at the data about if you care to do so. What a pathetic joke on tax9.
No Amtrak routes in eastern or middle Tennessee so Acella will never be a Chattanooga choo-choo.
Calm down, Chicken. I was only thinking of private investors and dreaming of a system like Europe had years ago.
A relaxing way to see this beautiful country. Wouldn’t have to be high-speed. Reasonable fares. No worry about crime since people act respectfully. Yes, at one time this could be accomplished... and actually was across America in 1869.
Too bad it’s deemed not possible now.
We live in a different world.
After taking a long trip via amtrak where we were regularly needing to stop to take off criminals I was less in love with it.
I love the romance of trains, but it wont happen here or now.
We are forced to subsidize new lines here, that have little or no users.
Modern dining cars on Amtrak look pretty much like the one in your 1950s picture.
“Didnt realize the road beds were not suitable. Had no issues with that, of course, back in the 1970s in Europe. Had very comfortable rides and could easily travel from one country to the next.”
Freerepublic is not a leftist site. You are allowed to use the first person pronoun.
Ha....I thought it was Obama who always said, “I...me...I...me...I...I...I...I
Just tend to write this way sometimes, no first person pronouns. Oh, sorry, meant to say for your sake, “I just tend to write this way sometimes, no first person pronouns.”
