Not likely an issue unless you shoot reloads without trimming your cases back.

The YouTube channel "InRange TV" just completed a Battle Rifle comparison which included most of the familiar 7.62 NATO choices - and also used an AK-74 and an AR-15 in their standard chamberings as "controls" in the data sampling.

The results are pretty interesting, particularly the ergonomics issues and the magazine loading part of the manual of arms ("rock and lock" vs. Armalite style). I think the video series in four parts, each a different brief task, and each followed by a brief discussion. Finally, they wrap it up with a fifth "overall winner" episode with more discussion. Not overly long, and worthwhile if you're considering a .308 semi-auto.

Mr. Wittemore is the kind of guy that I really admire.

Just looking for something that can take the 5.56 pressures.

Most of the chamber difference is in the "leade" (taper from chamber to rifled bore). This guy sells a 5.56 chamber reamer that cuts the leade area only and won't harm the chamber shoulder area or damage the rifle's headspace. Should be just the ticket.

Of course, if you've been shooting 5.56 ammo in it all along and never experienced any overpressure problems (see link), then your chamber may be fine as-is.

I picked up 3 more in the last month. Of course I wasn’t lacking in the firearms dept but you can never have too many.

Get an AK 47 clone in 7.62. Very reliable and very easy to field strip and clean.

Maybe they’ve changed since I got mine a decade plus ago but shortly before that the DEA bought 5,000 of them. Mine seems tight as a drum.

“There are Americans... and then there are democrats. They’re NOT the same.”

You are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! Actually, many or (most?, all?) Democrats and leftist “don't consider themselves Americans.” IMO, they HATE AMAERICA and want it destroyed. After all, that is what we continually hear from them ad nauseum. Let me repeat — they HATE AMERICA. In an ideal world, they'd pack up and leave. But they don't.

Hey, I am all for free speech. But there is a limit when rest of us have had enough and we should be willing to fight back with WORDs first, then if necessary....

IMO, we Conservatives are the keepers of the US Constitution and we its defenders. That is how we should consider ourselves.

Just my humble opinion.

Ya. Small and effective against personnel. May not puncture through defenses (walls, etc.) like a 7.62 but it is the most optimal... from what I have seen.

Thanks. I have been watching Paul Harrell's videos on Youtube. Very good resource.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6QH13V2o68zynSa0hZy9uQ

He compares the 7.62 vs the 5.56. The 5.56 is best against personnel and the 7.62 is best against defenses and personnel. Just my opinion but the 5.56 seems to be the best cartridge.

Damn — the 5.56 tumbles through and explodes into shrapnel when it hits a target. If you want to shoot through walls, the 7.62 is the cartridge of choice at the sacrifice of weight and size. Both are extremely fast, too. BTW, the 5.56 does well against cinder blocks, too — just that it takes a few more shots to penetrate and destroy a cinder block.

The logic? — you can carry more 5.56 than 7.62 (weight and size).

Lol. Apparently, not. I have been shooting 5.56 in my 223 rifle for years and never had a problem.

Never had an issue with the cartridge loading either. My rifle is old maybe back when the gauge of steel were more (just a theory). The rifle is heavy too. I suspect that newer rifles of this type are lighter?

Thanks. Is there a way to inspect the rifle for “damage?”

The specimen I saw was from the AWB days. One of their annual special limited edition rifles. I would think that would mean addition scrutiny to QA, not that they should ever shirk in that regard.

The point is, dissent is fine; there was a time when yeah, hell, we disagree, but we’ll work together for the good of the Country.

But the radical Left that runs the democrats is WAY past working together.

AR type rifle? Receiver weight should be the same, unless you compare to polymer. Heavy barrels, or longer barrels, would make a difference.

I’m no expert on AR’s and gladly defer to others.

The question to them should be — “do they consider themselves Americans?” And do they believe in the Constitution as it was written?

If they hem and haw and then start ranting about how they hate America and are not quick to respond then their loyalties should be in question. Apparently they don't consider themselves Americans and then nor should we.

It is perfectly fair to have disagreements. But one thing that we should not disagree about is the preservation of the US constitution that we all, left and right, liberal and conservative, Democrats and Republicans, benefit from. No, if-ands-or buts.

I should point out that this “test” is the test that all new immigrants have to follow. If, while applying for citizenship, they go off on a rant about how evil the US is and how much they hate it, then the new applicant will probably not receive citizenship (as they should not).

I believe that new immigrants even have to swear allegiance to the US. This is all my opinion but this should be a minimum test.

Good point. Depends on the range to the target. Thanks!

Not in the budget right now but maybe I can ask Santa... :)

5.56 definitely struggles defeating some barrier materials. It’s particularly poor at defeating masonry.

But everything is a trade off. On balance I think it’s a very good cartridge overall in a self defense or civil defense role.

Exactly. I am only guessing how the decisions were made but it probably went something like...

We need a light, smaller cartridge and bullet that can be carried on the back of the solder. Quantity is better than brute force. Maybe because of the full-automatics like the M16 where you can shoot through your ammo store very quickly. A smaller cartridge might mean a smaller and lighter rifle too. And there would be other weapons available if you wish to shoot through a barrier. In Paul Harrells test, the 5.56 still destroyed the cinder blocks almost as effectively as the 7.62.
