Thanks for this. Count me among the Win 10 haters — I have a laptop and a tablet with Win 10 and they’re both unused. My main computer is a 2 year old desktop that I really love and I suppose if I have to, I’ll download Win 10 for it (dragging my feet and screaming all the way). Replacing the desktop is out of the question — heck, I just had to replace my iPhone 6 for the same reason. GRRRR.
Ah yes, the hardware at our University was all that we had at that time too. Timesharing was too expensive and computer time was free (no written policy either or someone to ask what we were doing hanging around the computer center at 2 am.)
IMHO: I think Paul Allen was the genius who made it happen and Gates was a snake oil salesman who is still peddling his peanuts to the consumer.
Let us know how it goes.
Time to upgrade to Windows 98SE!
Let me know what happens. I’ll be interested in finding out if the upgrade to Windows 10 is still functional with a W7/8.1 Product key.
I just installed the Ultimate edition this weekend on a laptop in a dual boot configuration with Linux Mint Cinnamon. I have one old 3d graphics program that won’t work correctly on VMWare or Virtual Box. It even has the same problem when remoting into a Windows box from Linux.
It will run correctly in Wine, but freaks out if the window is expanded to anything over 1024x768.
That image brings back memories!
Some can laugh, but what I said was true.
Why “upgrade” if everything is wotking fine, you don’t require any of the “improvements” in the “upgrade”, your system is stable and you have current antivrus apps.
I was in IT for many years. New releases from Microsoft were referred to “vaporware” before AND after they came out. Often what was “new” was stuff that independents were already delivering that Microsoft stole, copied or bought up and bundled into the OS.
What Micropsoft excelled at more than anything was not technology - it was marketing. It still is.
Not so with the politicians, lawyers, bankers, preachers, and so forth of our society... but you chose wisely, so you will probably have a job for the rest of your life if Microsoft continues to diddle with their WINDOWs software. I wish you well...
This is where I found ISO images for Windows 10, and there are others there as well!
Truer words were never spoken!
Something about that doesnt sound right. WinXP is NT-based; Win98 is MSDOS-based. They are completely different, and largely incompatible systems. Programs that ran on one could not, by definition, run on the other, if they actually used operating system functions.
So Ive got a question for you, but let me explain why I ask.
It was a difficult undertaking to run Win98 programs on WinXP, but because that was the upgrade path, Microsoft and software manufacturers went to great lengths to convert Win98 software to run on WinXP.
There was no market pressure or motivation to make WinXP programs run on Win98, and Im unaware of anybody doing so for programs that actually used the operating system functions.
If on the other hand a program was a set of interpreted scripts (batch files, BASIC programs, etc.), and ran with an interpreter (i.e. the program didnt use the operating system functions directly), then it could run on either operating system as long as there was an interpreter.
So, what were the WinXP programs you ran on Win98? Im not calling you out on it, mind you but my technical curiosity has gotten the best of me and Id love to know. :-)
The programs were basic word processing and spreadsheet programs, not anything complicated; oh, and Visio, before it was acquired by MS, and a database app called “Alpha......(something or other), and a data charting app. I have never been a gamer nor was ever into getting “free” music and stuff off the Internet, nor doing much with photoshop type stuff. My work has always been mostly text and data related, not concerned very much with high end graphics or sound stuff.
Fascinating, thanks!
And I hate win 10.
Glad Im not the only one.
Young Programmers Gone Wild seem to think everyone likes things their new way, has hawk eyes, wants lotsa gadgets, likes their old apps or printers being killed, and likes being tracked. Umm...NO. HELL NO.
Sounds like the Compaq portable PC I had as my first work PC.
If you do a web search, you may be able to find the link. There is no difference in the Windows version itself. It's just that Windows 10 has new, disability assistance features built in that Win7 or Win8 doesn't have.

“No free upgrade anymore.”
That may not be entirely true. While the free upgrade was officially discontinued quite some time ago, unofficially it appears to still be available.
It’s been over a year since I last updated a PC from 7 to 10 but I was able to do it for free well after the free upgrade offer ended.
That was my first work PC :) With Modicon 584, Wordperfect, Lotus 1-2-3 and XTree.
