I’m self-employed. zer0 administration killed our nest egg and also killed business, so we needed to use retirement savings to live for 8 years. DH worked (self-employed)until age 67, when zer0 & company impacted discretionary spending and hurt our businesses. He helps in my business and spends his time fixing our property so we can sell and downsize. He picks up some money with a few old clients. Savings are at an all time low, but we still have some. Driving an 18-year-old truck. Rusty, but runs well.
Business picked up dramatically after DJT was elected. Cost of living increased, too. We have nowhere left to cut. Have a signed offer on the property and the home inspection is next week. Orders are as good as possible.
I’m 76, DH is 68. So far, no major health problems. Supplemental insurance is expensive. We both take SS, but we never made a lot, so it covers about 1/2 living expenses, business covers the rest. Once the sale goes through and we’ve downsized, things will ease up a bit with extra cash to beef the savings. I will need to continue working, at least for a while and am glad I can. DH will restart one of his former businesses when he doesn’t need to be doing home construction/maintenance all the time.
So: I make more than $15 and pay self-employment taxes and my own *benefits*. The net is my *wage*.
I’ve been financially comfortable and I’ve struggled financially. Such is life. Hope to be financially comfortable again, soon. Never asked for help and none was ever offered.
This series on the poor working non-unionized jobs is propaganda. I’ve worked for myself for over 50 years. I’ve had employees. Most were not worth the money and supervisory time. A couple were wonderful. I paid as much as I could, but my jobs were all part-time, cash. The good workers went on to succeed. The bad ones, didn’t.
This tired-out 29-year-old might consider how much energy is being sucked by the union organizers. She could get a few more hours sleep if she didn’t have meetings and retreats and actions to attend.
Not a lot of sympathy.
In my area, many fast food workers are adults who appear to be immmigrants.

Exactly, you must be near me in age. I worked all those fast food places going through High school and college in the mid to late 1970s and we NEVER ever ever saw anyone that we would call an “adult” working there, meaning someone who had kids and was working McDonalds as their main occupation. We didn’t even have senior citizens or retirees. It was unthinkable. Adults worked adult jobs like teachers or a cop or were in the military not McDonalds. Even our manager was in his mid 20s and back then that seemed old. I don’t know, maybe it was the baby boom but still, seeing someone older than us just didn’t happen. Now I go to a McDonalds I see men, women in their 30s, 40s even 50 and above working as cashiers and I’m asking myself why are the working there? Are they felons?
You will reach a cost that employers are no longer willing or able to pay. Then jobs will go away and hours will be cut. I would be for extending the earned income tax credit to workers without children. I do agree that we need to try to reach out to all hard working Americans.

for those who belittle the folks that work these jobs, all I'll say is SOMEBODY has to work them because Americans need their lattes, their breakfast burritos,their lotto tickets, their oil changed, etc......we NEED people to do these jobs and for that, I am respectful and thankful to them...

So what happens when cost of meat goes up? The cost of meat has almost doubled in the last dozen years or so. Does the restaurant shut down? No, labor costs are just like that.
Just moved from Southern CA to MS.
In CA with the exception of In and Out Burger and Chic Fil-A, nearly every Fast Food joint used Latino Workers. Can’t say if they were Legal or Illegal, but I do know that Carl’s Jr. (Hardees) used E-Verify when hiring.
Here in SW MS, most Fast Food workers are young Black Men and Women.
Some things that are very noticeable for us living here.
In CA the service was much faster and there were fewer messed up Orders. Also, communication skills with People who use English as a second Language in CA are far superior to those here with People who use English as ther first Language. My Wife says it kind of sounds like English, but not quite. She has a heck of a time.
We just adapt to it, something like Island Time when you visit the Caribbean. LOL
Make of that what you will, it’s just the reality here. Kudos to anyone who goes out and works for a living when the Political Liberal Elites are always trying to make it easier to be lazy while living off the Gubmint Teet.

Minimum wage should go away completely. The market would work wonders for Ms./Mrs./Mx Brown.
My first job paid $1.60 hr. ($256 mo. gross)
My apartment was $80 mo., water/ garbage included.
(So-called “luxury” apartments could be had for $125.)
Electric $10 mo.
Local phone $8 mo.
Bus fare to work .25 per ride. ($5 per mo.)
Total of basic living expenses = $103
$256-103= $153 for food, clothing, entertainment.
So, IOW, in the 1960s, you could live on minimum wage & have big bucks left over.
The reality today is, minimum wage us not enough even to cover rent, which in major cities can run over $1000 per mo. for a 1-room studio.
Rent subsidies exacerbate the problem— allowing landlords to overcharge for housing.
No, I disagree they’re not like that. The fast food industry has the ability to mechanize and eliminate jobs if the price of labor gets too high. They will also be able to close stores that will no longer be profitable and thus eliminate even more jobs. The cost of beef is what it is. The cost of
labor is fungible.
