Wow!

You realize what this means?

1. An entry in “Astonishing Tales of the Sea.

2. First dibs on the apartment across from George Costanza!

I spent many years in the cruise business, probably four or five solid years of my life was at sea (working).

Those ships were anchored at Cozumel island, and they stupidly usually only anchor at one end (the bow (front) or stern (back). Then the wind comes along and these ships are just like big sails that can twist & turn freely in the breeze. Of course all the weight is below water and the upper structure is thin steel and glass - so when they hit each other there is not much resistance to doing a fair amount of damage. Most of the time the bridge officers have radar and collision alarms armed & ready, so someone either fell asleep or was otherwise occupied.

These ships will probably go to Mobile AB or maybe Nassau for repairs. The affected room was the dining room and it was not crowded, fortunately.

That’ll buff right out.

Unsightly, but it still seaworthy. I wonder if they'll continue the cruise and tape off that part of the ship, or transfer the passengers for cosmetic reasons.

I’ve never been on a cruise. Somehow being on a large boat with gobs of people I probably wouldn’t care to be around isn’t so appealing.

Okay.

I’m laughing.

It’s such a coincidence. She put it up immediately after it happened.

I can’t imagine being on a boat that crashed like that. She said it was nothing and nobody was hurt.

Oddly enough, my brother and sister-in-law both invited me on this cruise. One of the things on my bucket list is to go on a cruise as I’ve never been on one.

Heh. Man if I would have went when those two big boats collided I’d have fainted.

Like I said in a later post, one of the things in my bucket list is a trip on a cruise. I’m looking age 70 right in the eye so need to get on it.

BUT....but, but, but....I have doubts such as yours.

I’d have to have some private space. How long are those cruises...like 7 days?

I just don’t know. I just don’t know.

I have a menu from the Andrea Doria (it used to be on my home page but TinyPic is no more - I need to find another host). My two older brothers sailed on it a couple years before its fated voyage. Technically, they are Andrea Doria survivors and should be able to have George’s apartment, but that’s just my opinion.

“In this age of radar, computers and GPS technology, why would any ships ever collide?”

Google “GPS Hacking”. It’s become a major problem in Chinese waters in particular. Ship locations are being inaccurately displayed all the time. There’s even a suspicion that this may have contributed to collisions involving US naval vessels last year.

Cruise lengths vary from 3 days (not recommended) to round the world cruises of 90 days or more. Most itineraries are designed around a 7 day sailing. Some sail for 10-15 days (extended southern Caribbean and transatlantic repositioning cruises). Just depends on your budget and what interests you. There’s plenty of private space on board most ships. You can interact with other passengers as much or as little as you like..

“That’ll buff right out.”

My company will send out 4 welders who will fix that in a jiffy. The cruise line supplies the steel, weld wire and the paint. Oh, and you’ll have to feed them and... errr... pick up their rather large bar tab.

“Schettino this is not going to go well for you.” The advice that the port director gave to Capt. Schettino after the Concordia crashed into the rocks and the skipper abandoned ship will also apply to the ship’s Capt here. It’s not going to go well for you.

Just another reason to never cruise with Carnival.

” They were parking/already parked. “

Maybe docking/already docked or possibly some even more nautical word.

My inclination toward cruises is “oh he11 no”, but I did go on one and managed to have a good time. Just have to mentally block out the other bodies, enjoy the shows & excursions, and find whatever (mentally) quiet spots you can. My highest anxiety (disclaimer: I’m a very low-anxiety introvert) was being sure of returning to the ship on time (if you’re late, find your own very expensive transport home). Be as minimally (but sufficiently) equipped as possible, plan out your excursion routes & schedule before leaving the boat (and preferably before starting the cruise), take a very small camera. A balcony room would likely be best choice (I had a no-view center room).

Do it, enjoy it, be done with it.
