The Left knows that taking over the populace begins in K-12 nanny state indoctrination. They want to care for the children from cradle to grave and make them require big government to live.

How dare you love, care, and feed your own children! That is the states job, comrade!
Leftists cannot and will not ever be satiated. There is injustice to be found everywhere, including packing your children’s lunch.

“As an individual family decision, packing lunches might seem like the best option, especially for children with special dietary needs. But when millions of families do so, their actions reduce the political will and financial resources necessary to make public school lunches better for everyone.”

And like everything liberals touch, Moochelle Obama’s program resulted in more kids going hungry, less appetizing meals and more logistics problems with supply chain and vendors.

Lunch ladies used to make fine food. I never ate it. I figure it was fine because people bought it. Sone friends bought lunch every day. I brought lunch. It was about half half bringing and buying across the school.

Personally I couldn’t imagine not bringing a bag lunch.

This guy has no idea h ow much school lunch food gets tossed by the kids each day because it’s so awful.

Parents pack their kids school lunches because they eat light years better than the free lunch kids and they can even get more.

When my son went to public high school, he took his own lunch because the school lunch was so inadequate for growing teen boys that the kids who were buying would often buy two and even then the lunch people complained and they weren’t full.

Some of his classmates actually offered to pay him to make their lunch every day.

...and the portion size. I retired from teaching 6 years ago. When I dropped off my students if they served chicken nuggets my 7th graders would get 3.

I checked out the comments section and most people think this is a ridiculous article.

I started making my own school lunch at about age 10-11. I didn’t like what my mother provided so I had free reign of the pantries or could spend my allowance on cafeteria food. A peanut butter sandwich (no jelly!) and a banana kept me sustained for years. Allowance and babysitting money paid for chocolate milk on chocolate milk days and the occasional pizza on pizza days.

What would this bureaucrat say to a child making their own lunch? Is this a case for the huge manatee?

I packed 5 school lunches a day for years, until they wanted to buy lunch as they grew older. No problem at all.

The department’s own data shows that participation in the national lunch program is higher in cafeterias that serve healthier meals...

Show me the data.

Why are you still sending your kids to Government (Marxist/LGBTQP indoctrination) schools?

But when millions of families do so, their actions reduce the political will and financial resources necessary to make public school lunches better for everyone.

Your exercise of choice hinders our ability to leech off the government.

In-friggin-credible.

“We should, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, be paying for the school lunches (plus breakfasts, in many cases, and “to-go” snacks for others)of any but the NEEDIEST students.”

It was announced last year that one of the local district schools would provide lunch for EVERYONE at the school, regardless of need, because so many of the children qualified for free/reduced price lunch. Someone I know has kids that go to that school and she was thrilled, even though they can afford to pay for the children’s lunches. I’m sure it saved her hundreds of dollars a month. Multiply that by 100’s of families.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

"What a bizarre take on the subject!"

It's a perfect example of the flawed theory that more government money makes better government. In fact, thousands of years of examples have proven just the opposite. Unfortunately, government schools of indoctrination have burned the opposite into student's minds. Some, mostly in the media and in the government education system, haven't ever learned the truth. I learned it early...when I received my first real pay check. Many never do.

“But when millions of families do so, their actions reduce the political will and financial resources necessary to make public school lunches better for everyone.”

How dare people choose what’s best for their own children.

Why would buying an unsatisfactory school lunch make public school lunches better for anyone? Does a monopoly encourage improving quality? Are only buck idiots allowed to be “school policy experts”?

We packed lunch for all of our kids (and still do for the one still in high school). They are our kids and it is our responsibility to feed them. They get a healthy sandwich and drink with some kind of chips thing that hey liked and a treat of some kind. All of them have said their friends (most of whom buy lunch) would say they wished their parents would pack them something instead.

Not really related to the article, but in the 80’s when I was in high school we had two lines. The big volume line was the “fast food” side. On the other side was a smaller line with more traditional meat and three type cafeteria food. Most of the time, I really liked it. Would buy two extra milks and spent about $1.40 total. I must be super weird because I really miss those lunches.

The bureaucrap would have a royal fit to hear you demonstrated the initiative to make your own lunch. You’re supposed to let the state feed you (ever visit a cattle or sheep feedlot ?)
