I didn’t see a cause in the article (It’s late-night) but the turtle could have been picked up by mini-tornado that tracked over a pond. If that happens the tornado will suck up the water in the pond along with the fish and —— turtles. As the tornado deteriorates the fish and things will fall out of the clouds
That is the origin of the old myth about it raining fish

More than likely the poor thing was ran over on its edge making it skip out airborne at high speed.

Years ago, a good friend, an avid bicyclist, told me about riding in rural CA when a buzzard took off in front of him and then vomited all over him as he went past.

We had The Great Turtle Migration here on the Chattahoochee about fifteen years ago. Never did hear about why they were trying to cross from the Alabama to the Georgia side, but they were everywhere. River turtles the size of dinner plates, squashed on the roads like Halloween pumpkins, and they still kept coming. They were like zombie hordes. It was horror movie crazy. I guess the beer was cheaper on the Georgia side.

I had the hood of my car open up and smash the windshield. To make matters worse I had to drive like that to get off the freeway.
.............................................
Happened to me @ 65 mph in my then brand new ‘67 Ford Galaxy, on the Pennsylvania Turn Pike, I managed to pull over, tie down the hood and drive home carefully and changed my pants.

In 455 BC, Aeschylus, the great playwriter known as the Father of Greek Tragedy, died in a most unexpected way. He was said to have been killed by a tortoise which was dropped by an eagle that had mistaken his head for a rock suitable for shattering the shell of the reptile.
