Graceful reconciliation after the Civil War?

Exactly. Lee brought the war to an end and spent the rest of his life working to reunite the country. He was urged by many to not surrender but devolve the armies into guerrilla forces and carry on with the war. If Lee had chosen this path things would have turned out much differently.
