(”what’s the difference between stocking bullets and powder and just stocking up on ready to shoots.”)
_____

1st time rifle loads for 308 win match cost approx 40% of commercial loads, if you can find them. Since the brass can be reused, the subsequent cost is for bullet, primer and powder. This assumes components are available and economic forces have not impacted cost.

I can safely get 5+ reuses out of cases I’ve fired in my long guns. I do full length resizing to SAAMI specs to guarantee chambering in all my rifles, bolt or SA. Shoulder length resizing works the brass less, but the resulting cartridge may not (easily) chamber in all rifles and precision may suffer.

Rifle reloading is labor intensive, even if one uses a progressive press. Brass prep is critical and often requires trimming and chamfering and deburring the case mouth.

Reloading has an expensive initial outlay, and continued investment to minimize case prep and reloading time and improve consistency. I’ve long given up on determining the break even point $$$. It doesn’t matter. The match grade cartridges I prefer (243Win and 260Rem) are not generally available. This is why I reload.

Your pistol is what you use to fight your way to your rifle. You did buy a rifle, correct?

It may take this to make me take up bow hunting. LOL - my wife would love that, another expensive hobby.

45 gr pills at 1800-1900 fps without the hearing damage of a 556. My WWll 30 carbine is also not a deafening round inside a house.

“1st time rifle loads for 308 win match cost approx 40% of commercial loads, if you can find them.”

just stumbled onto 500 black tip bullets to load into 308. A friend needed money and sold me 500 black tip 30.06 rounds for .60 cents a round. My shooting buddy and l pulled all of the bullets last weekend and we are going to start loading them into 308 rounds this weekend. Those things are wicked - they’ll go half way through an engine block.

As Levy78 says, everyone should be well stocked by now or learned to reload and cast.

That said, there are still ARs available.

Don't discount bolt action rifles, shotguns and .22lr.

I you're late to the game those are all very viable options, with ammo still available and will be sufficient in the vast majority of cases.

You should tread carefully when manufacturing “armor piercing” ammo. Black tip hardened steel projectiles could be loaded in 30-06 but not in 30 cal cartridges for which there are pistol chamberings, like 308 Win.

This was my understanding 15 or so years ago. Check the federal regs.

great point, Eagle6. There are great calibers that are less subjected to the buying sprees like .270, 30-30, 30.06, etc. that are widely available in bolt action or low cap old tech autos loaders like M1 Garand or lever action models. These are proven and superb calibers and rifles. Dated but effective. If I were just entering the hobby, I would focus on these effective and, importantly, available options.

I just got 4 boxes of 25_06 Prvi brass cased 90gr HPs for under $16 a box from Gunbot. Really I just wanted the brass but since brass has been scarce I’ll take loaded cheap rounds fire them to formem to my chamber then neck size in the match grade bergers I really want in them. The old school 30_06 derivatives are not “sexy” short action loodemboomers so they are almost always on stock.

They also had 270,30_06, and 35 whelan available all calibre I own but my Rem700 in 25_06 gets the tap for coyote blasting does a number on feral hogs as well with less kick than the other 3.

“So, I have >500 rounds of 9mm.
What scenarios do you think I might need that much?”

>>500 rounds of 9mm is ten boxes. Nothing. Take a single pistol class (and you MUST take some sort of formal training!) you will use up that 500 rounds in a day.<<

I concur 1,000%.
500 rounds is just what you leave in your bugout bag.
500 rounds is one good day of training.

I don’t have a weekly slot anymore on the AJS, they just call me with a few hours notice to fill in.

And then I never know if I’ll have the full hour, and need material ready for that, or if I’ll have 3/4 or 1/2 of an hour. If I go light on preparation, then I’ll get a full hour and I’m not ready. If I go heavy on preparation, I’ll get 1/2 hour. So it goes. It’s still a great opportunity now matter how it comes.
