If it were, they would sell off the brand to a smaller producer and see if it sinks or swims.

Ruins a great Aggie joke I heard from an Arkansas chicken mogul once.

What is a group of Aggies standing around singing, drinking diet sodas and eating apples?

Answer: The Moron Tab and Apple Choir

Yeah, I thought they quit making it 30 years ago when they came out with Diet Coke. That’s what it is, isn’t it?

Yup. The initial roll-out of Diet Coke was not without controversy within the Coca-Cola company. The fear was (and I shared it) was that by having multiple drinks called Coca-Cola, that the name itself would be cheapened.

The prediction was correct, but the net result has been more money for the company, and dominant marketshare. So first was Diet Coke, then Caffeine Free Coke and Caffeine Free Diet Coke, "New" Coke/Coke II, Cherry Coke, Diet Cherry Coke, Coke Blak, Coke Life, Coca Cola C2 (1/2 sugar/hfcs, 1/2 artificial sweetener), an entire line of Coke and Diet Coke products with different fruit flavors addded, plus a lot of unlisted products sold in other parts of the world.

No room left for Tab. Royal Crown was almost as bad. At one point that diet soft drink pioneer had Diet Rite, RC 100, and Diet RC.

Tab is my favorite. Now the only thing left is Fresca. I like the bitterness of Tab. I used to get crap, back in the day, when I’d pull out the pink Tab bottle on a construction site.

That and Fresco was the only soda my mom had in the house when I was a kid. Yeech.

Back in the ‘70s, my girlfriend was visiting Seattle and having a drink at a bar. Some guy sidled up to her, hoping for a possible pickup I suppose, and they chatted. Then he asked her if she “liked coke”. She said, “No. I like Tab.” Turns out he wasn’t talking about soft drinks. He wrote her off as no fun at all, and moved on. Don’t know why I recall that story; it was so long ago.

She said, “No. I like Tab.”

LOL, surprised his response wasn't, "Oh, so you're into acid?"

Coke and Pepsi are putting most of their money on bottled waters, juice drinks, and healthier drinks, and less on their traditional soda lines. Plus the can shortage is reducing the multiple versions of their soda products. So why keep something with a minimal market share? Also most Coke bottlers bottle Dr Pepper not Mr Pibb.

She put him down hard, and sounds like he deserved worse.

“tab tab cola what a beautiful drink tab tab cola for beautiful people.” Its amazing that I can remember that thirty year old jingle. Must have been the hot mom in the commercial.

That's to avoid draconian Soda Taxes being imposed in loony Left places like Philadelphia (and I say that as somebody who personally gave up drinking the stuff for health reasons).

I shared a 1982 video of it in my comment. Takes me back to particularly that summer when it would play regularly during Tattletales, Alice, One Day at a Time, The Price is Right, Match Game, and other glorious daytime TV from that time.

Tab was a big soft drink in the mid 1970s. My mother drank it all the time but I couldn't stomach it. It was nasty stuff.

Also jogs my memory about an uncle who was an alcoholic. Went through a case of beer (Old Milwaukee) a day easy, with some hard stuff in between. He was the type of alcoholic who would crack a beer as soon as he got up and take it in the shower with him. He didn't even like the taste of Old Milwaukee but it was cheap.

Anyway, he kicked alcohol completely and went right over to Tab. It became his substitute for Old Milwaukee. A case or more a day.

That went on for about three years and then he died.

Diet coke with lemon, tasted like lemon Pledge. I called coca cola to let them know how horrible it was.
