One of Baens authors is Tom Kratman.
I just read the afterword he included in Carnifex and it is both savage and brilliant.
It explained some things I knew were true but could not explain exactly WHY I knew they were true.
Baen is about the only Sci-Fi publisher I will buy from, partly because they do have brilliant writers whom they allow freedom of thought and partly because they treat their authors right financially which is a rarity in book publishing.

I love Baen books.
It’s a great publisher. The left has to destroy everything it cannot control.

I thought about trying The Carrera series as I have never read Kratman. Weber, Ringo, Abercrombie and dozens of others but not Kratman.. I take it feel it is in the five star range?

He is hard military Sci-Fi.
Correia is fantasy in my opinion. Very good fantasy. I enjoy his stuff.
But Kratman has an edge without being preachy.
