"The chronically unemployed, ex-offenders..."

Ex-offenders that Cuomo released early from prison.

They forget that Cuomo threw millions of tax payer dollars into the Syracuse area, constructing buildings for business deals that fell apart, failing to create the jobs he claimed they would. This is just another one of those plans that will surely fail, and only put money in the pockets of Democrat donors.

Anyone else remember Solyndra? Obama handed them 535 million of our dollars which about an hour later proved to be a criminal operation. Back then Obama only had 750 billion or so to squander. Now they want to hand slow Joe 6 trillion?

“cut off previously connected neighborhoods in the heart of the city.”

The freeway is a flyover. You can walk under it. Without the freeway, there would be a whole lot less business going on in those areas.

...which leads to the real problem: the freeway needs DRASTIC maintenance, and at the rate local gov’t is going the whole road will be shut down, permanently, soon. Some years back a building partially collapsed onto I-81; took _months_ to clear a rather small amount of rubble and re-open the road. Outright collapse of a freeway span is likely, and would likely kill downtown Syracuse as consequence as biased bureaucrats bicker over solutions (seeing as the whole structure would soon follow suit).

I have no problem with employing veterans, but the chronically unemployed? A little commonsense is required. There are reasons why some people are chronically unemployed. I’m sure they will do an excellent work and we’ll get the best value from our tax dollars. (sarcasm)

Turning an interstate highway into a low speed stop an go street tour through a high crime neighborhood. What could go wrong. Democrats destroy everything.

I went to college at SU.
We NEVER crossed under I81 because the west side of the highway was the hood.

The dorm that was the closest to the highway had by far the highest incidence of rape and crime on campus. They instituted a policy that a coed had to come down to the ground floor and sign in any non dorm resident.
Plus you had to show ID to get in.

If they really wanted to build the interstate correctly they should bury it just like they did in Boston.
Keep in mind Syracuse gets the most SNOW of any major city in the lower 48.
Much more than Buffalo or Rochester.
The result of this surface road will just put most north/south through traffic onto 690 to go around the downtown area.

Maybe not, but I’m pretty sure that they have been doing such things since the WPA back in the 1930s.

Allowing fracking would help, but the environ-MENTAL-ists are in charge in NY.

Ah. You remember “Project 100,000.” Yes they would have been considered Chronic unemployable. For good reason. They ended up being cannon fodder, and the survivors on lifetime disability.

Update. Sigh. Upstate is depopulating. Syracuse is a hellhole. This boondoggle isn't needed, won't fix it, but Deep State doesn't give a ****.

I remember driving through the Syracuse inner city during the 1960s race riots. Wasn't safe back then.

Good news update! And, boy, that's a lousy pic of Gillibrand. With sycophants like that, who needs enemies?!

U.S. Senator Gillibrand in Syracuse calling lawsuit delaying I-81 project "ill-conceived"

BTW, note the bit about refugee families...
