I visited Dead Horse Point UT as a child back in 1955. There were cairns all over the place. Most were mining claims for every inch of ground outside the park.

Visited it years later, and all the cairns had disappeared.

Watched a hiking video of a couple in a state park up in the NE that had signs reading, “PLEASE DO NOT STACK ROCKS”.
