What kind of gun? If it's a Ruger GP100, I seriously doubt that a toddler could depress the trigger on it.
If it's a Colt Combat Commander Lightweight that was chambered and hammer back and safety off, then, yeah, a toddler could fire it.
I'd have to know more facts about it before concluding what happened.

Was the safety on? A toddler has the strength to hold a gun, undo the safety and point it at his mother’s head and the strength to pull the trigger?
I don’t think so.
I agree with the other posters. It was the boyfriend pinning it on (maybe) his child. Though the toddler probably was not his child.
