Darn, that book is not where it’s supposed to be!
Will look in other places as I can. It’s a good book on fabrics in general and I think the thread would benefit from it.

Our county fair is strictly a youth fair. We have club kids volunteer for security detail and a skinny rope keeps people from walking into the club booths. Exhibits were down this year, lots of clubs could not have many meetings. But still some very nice projects.

“Any other ideas for finding Fair entrants?”

You could try finding a facebook page for craters in your area or start one, and then promote the fair.

Brilliant!

It could be ‘Save The Arts at the Fair’ or something along those lines. I like it! :)

Something I saw that is interesting - I've never heard of these before:

Website:

ITCHIN4STITCHN - Preemie Crochet Bonding Squares· FREE CROCHET PATTERN

Excerpt from link:

Bonding squares are simple crochet or knit squares, typically about 5″x 5″ / 12.5cm x 12.5cm, but I have seen them a bit smaller at 4″ x 4″ or 3.5″ x 3.5″.

The squares are made in matching pairs, one square is placed with the preemie baby, who is, upon birth, often immediately taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital. The second square remains with the baby’s parent(s).

The squares are worn or placed close to the skin and each day they are swapped so that the baby receives the parent(s) scent and the parent(s) receive the baby’s scent.

Believe it or not, scent is one of the most developed senses in premature infants, so bonding squares are intended to help NICU families to bond with their babies through smell.

Because these squares are placed on or near the skin of the most delicate of little beings, bonding squares need to be created using “baby soft” hypoallergenic yarn (i.e. 100% cotton or 100% acrylic – if possible).

Very interesting! I’ve made dozens of preemie blankets and caps, but I have never heard of this before. Makes sense. :)

For this “Labor” Day holiday weekend, I decided I would do something I really hate ... sew in all the loose ends on my 24 pairs of finger-less mittens. The mittens have been my COVID sanity project this year - sitting in the porch swing, listening to podcasts, enjoying being outside & knitting mittens.

Thus far, I have gotten ends woven in on 14 pairs. Whew. One pair is already spoken for .... chemo mitts for someone newly diagnosed. This is the 3rd pair ... for some reason, it seems my niece’s friends are all coming down with breast cancer. I need to send them to her in about a week, so that was the impetus to get busy sewing in the ends on that particular pair & I decided to keep on going & get it over with for the rest of them. I was also dog sitting this weekend & the pay was a very decent bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon - ‘sipping’ helps the sewing seem less onerous.😊

Getting all the mittens totally completed has been a major “to do” list item hanging over my head so I’m actually feeling pretty good about the progress that’s been made this weekend.

Winner Winner! Chicken Dinner! Two-Years-Running Blue Ribbon Champ! 🙂 AND I had competition this year - she won 2nd Place, Red. I've decided to branch out next year into Photography and Preserves as well. My life FINALLY has MEANING now that I've found my Inner Competitor. *SMIRK* Fun day at the Fair. The best, by far, were the Harness Races and then making fun of the Carnies along the Midway. Life Is Good in Iowa County. ❤

'Qiviut' .... on the hoof! I love this pic, btw - colors, composition.

What the heck is a "Qiviut"?

Qiviut = The soft wool lying beneath the long coat of the muskox, valued for its use as a fiber.

Qiviut is truly an amazing fiber. The delicate underwool of the muskox is like no other and the highest quality fiber in the world. It is cherished because of its rarity, softness and exceptional warmth. Qiviut is stronger and warmer than sheep’s wool and softer than cashmere wool. It’s an insulating fiber and is comfortable to wear in any weather.

Pure qiviut is unshrinkable, non-felting and non-abrasive. The more you handle and wash qiviut, the softer it feels.

Question: How well do Musk Ox take to shearing? Glad that’s not MY job! ;)

Question: How well do Musk Ox take to shearing? Glad that’s not MY job!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Wild:
“Adult musk ox naturally shed qiviut from their undercoat during April and May. During the molting stage, it will loosen from their skin and work its way out through the other 2 layers of guard hair. Musk Ox will actively rub up against bushes, trees and anything they can, even grave stones, in an effort to get qiviut off. There are between 4,000-5,000 wild Musk Ox in the state of Alaska. People living in bush Alaska can run around in the spring and collect it from the bushes and tundra. Or in the winter subsistence hunt a Musk Ox for food, and comb the qiviut from the hide.”

Non-wild:
Qiviut sheds naturally between April and the end of May. Here on the farm we will comb the qiviut off the animal starting mid-April. All of our animals are brought into the barn where, in most cases, we put them in a combing stall and jump in there with them with a long toothed hair pick. The remainder stay in our squeeze chute where panels can be removed and we can get to all parts of them while they munch on grain. A combing session can last from ten minutes with an animal to as much as hour depending on how relaxed everyone is. We will gather anywhere from a few pounds to as much as nine pounds per animal with an adult average of four and a half pounds.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I had to LOL at the “depending on how relaxed everyone is” statement.

They use those ‘grooming stalls’ at the Fair to pretty up the cows before judging. I have found, even with my (getting HUGE!) steer, that if he knows he’s getting sweet oats, he’ll let you do just about whatever you want to him! ;)

Weber is the biggest puppy I’ve ever raised, LOL!
