One should file their return, and obtain receipt/proof of filing, and have IRS sign for receipt of the return.

One can send a letter with proof of filing, and request a response that the return was filed. Expect a slow response.

Or: You can send a letter documenting your previous filing with a copy (marked copy) and explain that you are filing a duplicate return and that you haven’t received your refund. Ask for a response or confirmation of the returned being filed.

Keep a copy of all correspondence with IRS with proof of mailing.

You can also use taxpayer advocate.

Another reason to efile in future. You reduce probability of these sorts of problems. Many things can go wrong with a manual process. The forms might have never reached the IRS and got lost. Not likely but possible.

More likely your forms are sitting on someone's desk in the IRS and got lost amidst all their paper.

I efiled in May and it was processed within weeks. Good luck!

Thing is... They would just love to force us to do EVERYTHING electronically. And because so many capitulate and fall for it out of laziness or slight convenience it is working.

We are now about to embrace digital currency because of this.

If more would just say no, they would back off. Trends of electronic convenience like this are killing this country.

Yep took me 6 months to get my refund, and it was cut by a $1000 which never has happened in 40 years of filing..

I contacted them a couple months ago and all they did was shuffle me off to a different department who in turn shuffled me off to another department who also shuffled me off to another department, all in one afternoon. All 3 departments told me different things about whether I still owed them money. So frustrating. I’m calling my local TA office next week instead of the 800 number.

Is there a local IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center? Search for your city and local telephone number. You’ll need to set up an appointment (mine was four weeks out) but once I got in they were helpful. Not pleasant, efficient, or at all empathetic (fraudulent return- ID theft- thankfully I’d already filed a police report by the time I met with them ). Kind of like the DMV but with even shorter hours of operation and staffed by people who could speak in complete sentences if they were sufficiently motivated. I’d literally spent days on hold trying to get through when calling the main number— hold time with the local number was only about fifteen minutes and got the appointment booked.

We filed in mid May too and I just noticed our refund was deposited yesterday. I’m surprised we got it because the IRS claims we still owe them money from 2005. They’re actually garnishing our social security money over it, even tho the statute of limitations has been over for 5 years. They supposedly reassessed our return in 2010 — although I was never notified of it — which restarted the SOL clock. I hate those sockcuckers.

2019 tax return filed 3 times to get it to take. Always make sure you have a reproducible copy and a copy of the envelop that you mailed it. Note that they cashed my check on the first try.

Since you couldn’t e-file & didn’t send it via certified mail, about the only way you can check is look at the website, which you already did.

The IRS is really backed up, especially with paper returns. Due to the changes made by Congress DURING tax season, the IRS has had to go back & recalculate all the returns that were filed before the changes were made. Now they are sending out letters “explaining” the changes, but as it is the IRS, the letters are causing more confusion & more people are calling.

So, the next thing to do is call. It is a real hassle, but you need to talk to a real person. As a CPA, I have to call the IRS all the time. We have a “special hotline” but it still takes forever. So, you need to put the phone on speaker & just keep hitting re-dial over & over again, until they answer.

I hope you make a copy of the return, or at least can reprint if necessary. At least you are due a refund, so there will not be any penalties or interest.

As some have suggested, you can try the Taxpayer Advocate. However, since you don’t really have a tax problem, and your return has not yet been processed or on file, I doubt they will be of much help. They are good, but usually helpful with problems about the return, not missing returns, or returns that, according to the IRS don’t exist yet.

Let me know if you have further questions, but this is the course I would take or would advise my clients.

I request all of my bills to be sent through the mail. I don’t trust the “Cloud” one bit. It’s more work for me as far as paperwork but at least I still have some control over record keeping, etc. Plus I’m old school. If they don’t like it, they can ESAD.

Hi lovely lady.

I’ve documented on FR many times the trouble I’ve had with three states and the IRS.

Sometimes my CPA could handle it. Sometimes I had to use a tax attorney.

Other times it was a small amount I didn’t owe and paid it anyway.

Good luck.

Alabama is also a problem for me. But that is another kettle of fish. We’re only an hour from the capital and I could go bang on their doors.

True.

I mostly use "folding money" wherever I can.

In this instance, I suspect the original poster is being made an example of [to herself], along with thousands of others.

IRS was on our case when they thought we owed them money.
Then we filed an amended return and they owed us a little bit.
It was MONTHS before the Return showed up.
