Todd Rundgren produced Bat Out of Hell. He nice said he was doing a Springsteen parody as he felt Bruce took himself too seriously. Funny that Bat Out of Hell outsold anything Springsteen did I at that point.

I sensed that more than ever when Heath Ledger died and there was 3 months of sorrow every single day, over and over again, about what such a terrible loss it was the Heath Ledger passed away.

I had no clue who he was.

Vapid celebrity worship is a sign of a decadent and deteriorating culture.

***********

Has there ever been a time in recorded history when people didn’t idolize those with some kind of talent, ability or even power? It human nature. You can debate the value of a person’s contribution to society/culture but we all value things differently.

What is vapid is in the eye of the beholder, as are so many things.

"critical insight to life’s existential questions and conflicts"

"Praying for the end of time" isn't existential enough for you? ;)

Some of us just enjoyed his music and acting. The guy had operatic talent that he applied to well written and orchestrated rock and roll and acted creditably in a few memorable films. In the context of this website, it helps that he was a vocal Conservative when interviewers asked about his politics. It’s not necessarily “worship” when you simply enjoyed, and are saddened with the passing of, an entertainer with genuine talent and who came across as someone you could share a beer or two with.

The recording industry had to develop a new classification to their system because of the Eagles album sales. Thus Platinum category.

He gave us joy. Being sad when someone who gave us joy dies is not celebrity worship, it’s human. Sorry it bothers you, but it’s on you, not us.

After my parents retired, part of their morning breakfast ritual was reading the obituaries.

Always seemed like a macabre start to the morning, to see who died and the perverse joy they had not seeing their names listed among them.

But it kinda makes sense now that I’m getting older and can also mark time by the names, faces and voices I grew up leaving us.
