In no way do I approve of what he did. But unless there is more, your prescription is much too extreme. Even Chris Rock didn't want to make it a prosecution. It will be punishment enough that he has poleaxed his career and has lost rights and privileges of membership in the Motion Picture Academy. I hope he divorces his wife. She has ruined his life. Both of them should be banned from the Oscars in perpetuity.
His wife was a thug before she married him. He didn’t marry up.
She is only one vote out of about 54 governors. She was only elected last year, so I doubt she is going to be the boss of what gets done.
Wow, that's taking product placement too far.
You could be right; if so, Chris Rock would have to have been in on it. Hence, the feet planted and hands behind back before and during the slap, and the reluctance to press charges. I'm having trouble believing that of him, though, since he was flustered and misspoke before resuming the award hosting. God only knows, if Pfizer was in on it, what they put in Will's and Chris's RFID-taggeed vaccinations.
He was likable in Fresh Prince and I used to be a fan of the show, especially the butler’s wisecracks.
Agree -- also the Carlton character was so funny. The show was family-oriented and clean fun that we were comfortable letting our teenager watch, unlike many episodes of Friends, Seinfeld and Frasier that were on in the same time frame.
His descent into Hollyweirdness is tragic. Had it not been for his early success at rapping which sucked him up into show biz, he probably would have gone to college like his mother, or had an honorable career like his father. Here is his bio from Wikipedia, which aligns with the Fresh Prince character that made him a star:
Smith was born on September 25, 1968, in Philadelphia, to Caroline (née Bright), a Philadelphia school board administrator, and Willard Carroll Smith Sr., a U.S. Air Force veteran and refrigeration engineer. His mother graduated from Carnegie Mellon University* Wynnefield was not a terrible neighborhood at the time. Much of West Philly in the years he was growing up was dotted with black churches in almost every block of the main thoroughfares. All of Philadelphia bears little resemblance now to the family-friendly place it was then.He grew up in West Philadelphia's Wynnefield neighborhood* , and was raised Baptist. He has an older sister named Pamela and two younger siblings, twins Harry and Ellen. Smith attended Our Lady of Lourdes, a private Catholic elementary school in Philadelphia, followed by Overbrook High School. His parents separated when he was 13, but did not actually divorce until around 2000.
Smith began rapping at the age of 12. When his grandmother found a notebook of his lyrics, which he described as containing "all [his] little curse words", she wrote him a note on a page in the book, which read, "Dear Willard, truly intelligent people do not have to use words like this to express themselves. Please show the world that you're as smart as we think you are". Smith said that this influenced his decision not to use profanity in his music.
Disagree. Unlike the technical categories, writing, set design, etc, no one else was the point person for "Best Actor."
No; only to vote on who would win the awards. Getting nominated or even winning is sometimes how newcomers achieve industry buzz and consideration for other roles.
Kim K has already dumped Kanye.
But even Kanye is too smart and talented for Jada.
Probably right.
I never knew that; just looked it up:
I think steroids did him in. But he can still recover and hope he does.
Why do so many actors take steroids to look like steroid-user Arnold Schwarzenegger? Steroids screws up your mind, among other things, causing unexplained and bizarre behavior with abundant examples such as Tiger Woods.
Probably many moments of abusing some sort of substance before the show.
You may be on to something. He bulked up to play Ali, right?
It’s tragic, really. Blacks are still trying to just be judged as individuals, not as racial archetypes. Very sad for his family of origin, if they are still alive.
What’s their complaint? Their #OscarsSoWhite campaign worked. Now it’s #OscarsNotSoWhite and they don’t like what that entails.
If you or I did that, we would have been arrested.
True; but if we had his money, or even our good families, we would immediately post bond and be out on the street, calling our lawyer, since it was likely a misdemeanor or third-degree assault. I am often too picky about language, but you said "violent criminal"; but a criminal is one who has already been convicted. Until then, he is a "suspect" or an "alleged assailant." In these days of video, it's getting easier to skip the "equal protection" and "innocent until proven guilty in a court of law" steps.
One possible scenario in which he is not guilty of assault would be if the investigation determines that the slap was staged, and Chris cooperated, both using their acting skills. Although it seems unlikely, it's still possible, even under the events we saw on video.
