The ultimate Eurovision group (that's not a compliment).

What does the "Eurovision group" mean, as you used it?

Just looking at it, it appears to be an attempt to promote music by European groups in a forum that isn't subject to commercial pressures. For some reason, it reminds me of Canada's "Canadian content" regulations for their radio stations.

One of my favorites is “Fernando,” which refers to an unnamed war that could be anything from the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 to the rebellion against the Mexican Empire in the 1860’s.

I always assumed it was about the Spanish Civil War, to which many young people gravitated out of a misplaced sense of social justice.

Earnest Hemingway participated (as a ambulance driver) to get material for his future as a writer. Idealism (on the other side) about the Spanish Civil War plays a role in The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie, by Muriel Spark.

I don’t think the war in question is the Spanish Civil War because they sing of crossing the Rio Grande and not the Rio Bidasoa. So it could even be the US Civil War.

Good point. I guess it's just kind of a BS song.

On the other hand "Rio Grande" just means "big river." There's only one Rio Grande in the Spanish-speaking world?

But still, I agree with you.

Not sure if there are other rivers by that name, but they don't all agree on the name of the one we all know about. The Mexicans call it the Rio Bravo (wild river).

(I always thought this was a better song than “Dancing Queen.”)

Yeah, disco still sucks. Long live the prog bands of the ‘70s,
Genesis, Yes, Kansas, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Camel, Argent et al.

Hey, dummy…I have. Hence the reason I’m giving you a chance to prove your claim. I know the answer.

Just as I thought. You can’t produce evidence for your claim. Thanks for playing though.

All I think of with them is both couples divorced and there went the group and the way to make your living.

However it was the opposite in Fleetwood Mac, the divorces inside the band appeared to inspire them to make some great music.

The below linked article may not settle the argument conclusively one way or the other and it may provide TOO much information about the English language skills of the Abba group.

The long and short of it is that all members of Abba had English as their second language from a young age, their primary language of course, being Swedish.

While they were considered proficient in England, some of the members had difficulty singing in English, due to the phrasing and pronunciation of certain words. It does not appear to be stated in the article that cue cards were ever used but it seems likely that during recording at least, they had lyric sheets in which certain English words were phonetically spelled out so that they would not have as many mistakes when recording.

Still, especially on their ealier songs, you could hear that there were not particularly comfortable singing in the English language. Check out the Swedish version of "Waterloo" and compared with the familiar English version and you will see what I mean. They were much more comfortable and relaxed singing in their native language. The English version comes off as fairly stilted and stiff by comparison.

Here is the article I alluded to earlier that is quite lengthy.

Yep. Read that one. Also, as a fan of ABBA, I watched numerous documentaries of the group. They can speak English. Maybe not like you and I but they can without use of cue cards.

Yes, Fernando could be a donkey--or maybe a horse.

It was well known WHEN THE SONG CAME OUT that their early work was done phonetically, because I am old enough to remember when it came out. And I remember discussions about it at the time, and how amazing it was that they did so well, considering.

That’s all I was pointing out.

Then some rude, millennial know-it-all, pissant, DUMMY started name-calling. How is it these childish, trophy wielding morons can’t have a polite conversation without resorting to that. Yes eagleone I mean you.

I like some of those, but I much prefer disco. My favorite song from the seventies is Cherchez la Femme (chase the girl) by Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band (1976), a disco version of Paul Whiteman's 1920 hit Whispering. Another song in my seventies top five is Anne Murray's You Needed Me (1978).

Ok, junior. You wrongly claimed they could not speak English. You do know they learned English as a second language…right…mr know nothing ?? You did know that??

. And look at the one calling names! LOL.

. And if you had any reading ability you’d know your demographic characterization of me is wrong.

Now go take care of your cats and make me a samich.
