The researchers...used a two-step electrocatalytic process to convert carbon dioxide, electricity, and water into acetate, which is the main component in vinegar.

Electricity? So the plants are now coal powered instead of solar powered.

With nuclear or geothermal energy sources humans now have the means to survive a KT scale impact event living deep underground as the century long atmospheric destruction clears up. This makes us the first species to have this ability. It also allows for humans to colonize the stars since fusion or fission power can be used to grow food in deep space far from the Sun. Given that plants are at best 1% efficient in converting sunlight into chemical bonds and solar panels are 25+% efficient at turning a photon into electrons it’s a huge leap in the amount of chemical energy in the form of edible carbon per square meter of sunlight. This is nothing short of a quantum leap in human innovation. The ramifications can and will be immense. Exciting times we live in.

Think about how much edible carbon could be made with a single 1500 megawatt reactor. Feeding algae or yeast to chickens or pigs who don’t care what their pelletized feed is made with could make enormous amounts of meat in a very dense area.

Cattle eat grass and more specifically cellulose which their four chambered stomachs and the symbiotic relationship with the rumen organisms turn that cellulose into acetic acid this along with the microbial protein from the bodies of those symbiotic organisms is the primary energy sources in cattle.

The cow is simply a fermentation factory for its microbes to turn cellulose ,nitrogen and water into protein, acetic acid and methane gas. You will immediately appreciate that acetate when hydrated with water is acetic acid this can be feed directly to cattle as their primary energy vector with a nitrogen source such as ammonia or urea cattle can be raised with out a single blade of grass or kernel of corn.

There are yeasts that can turn acetic acid into 60% by dry mass amino complete proteins something that monogastic animals need every day. We are monogastic animals as are pigs and chickens and fish.

This will come in handy when we all have to live underground for a decade after the nuclear holocaust.

No but my chickens and Berkshire heritage breed hogs will gobble up yeast algae and fungi with out hesitation. Combine a compete yeast protein source with , lipids and starches from algae and the B6/12 vitamins and more protein from fungi in pellet form and feed that complete food source to livestock who will be happy to turn that into chicken tendies, eggs, bacon and pork.chips for you. But hey don’t let actual science get in the way of a good old fashioned doomer hissy fit by all means. Yes you will eat
Yeast and algae for the illuminati peasant! There feel better now?

It’s almost like the powers that be know apophis or some other large asteroid or comet is on an impact path. That would explain both parties spending like drunken sailors.

“Solar panels can power grow lights. Why would we need this method if we have access to either sunlight or electricity?”

No matter the light source plants are limited by the physics of the photosynthesis process to about 1% efficiency in turning light energy into chemical energy. It doesn’t matter if th at light source is the Sun or LEDs. These guys took that fundamental limit out. They are driving an electrochemical reaction that is limited by the Gibbs energy of the chemical reactions it is orders of magnitude more efficient the next effect is an 18 times increased output for a given amount of photonic energy. Solar panels are 20+% efficient at turning a photon into electrons that starts the process off with 19 times more energy than photon to chemical energy via the photosynthesis process. Forget solar panels this process doesn’t care where the DC voltage comes from. Go right to the big boy in human energy density nuclear power the amounts of electricity to carbon bond in the form of food energy a multi gigawatt reactor could provide is staggering and it could do that for a hundred years in total darkness underground or in deep space that’s the leap here.

Sounds great ... but what is the economy of scale here. Is this an interesting laboratory experiment. Let’s envision this for feeding 1-10 million people. A million acres of wheat, corn, potatoes, etc.

Single cell organisms grown in 100,000 gallon tanks using bulk acetate as the carbon source would be the way to make megatons of food grade materials. Think what a ethanol distillery looks like exactly the same type of bioreactor can be used to grow not only yeasts but single celled algae or any of the single celled protein makers like ecoli, fungi, cyanobacteria. Going to multicellular organisms is to please the human taste not a biological need. The important metric is how much acetate per square meter of surface area of the electrochemical cell at what voltage and what milliamp they show already great efficiency in those metrics. Once you have a liquid carbon energy molecule such as acetate you can use existing fermentation technology to mass produce millions of gallons or tons of product just like beer or vodka or ethanol for fuels. During the 1970s and 80s more than one country cultivated via fermentation protein sources using natural gas, light naptha, hydrogen and or carbon monoxide under a host of trade names the process is well understood and has been done at the millions of tons per year level. At one point 60% of the Soviet Union’s animal feeds protein was synthetic grown in tanks using ultra cheap to them light crude oil cast offs.

Using ethanol fuel distillery sized tanks you easily could feed a million people a nutritional complete human kibble like ration or in bar food form like the new MRE high density bars the military issues. Using just three tanks you could use acetate as the carbon energy molecule then grow single celled algae that naturally or GMO your choice produce high lipids and / or starches for your carbohydrate component. In the second tank you grow single cell protein choose one that has all 9 essential amino acids there are a dozen that do that are edible by humans directly. In the third tank grow fungi that specialize in B6/12 production yeasts do this too either would work. Then spin out the liquids from each tanks products blend to a net ratio of 20% protein the balance being carbohydrates and ensure enough B6/12 for normal function and there you have it human kibble. Or you could take that same product feed it to chickens and pigs and eat them. Cattle don’t need carbs they do need protein so cut the carbs way down feed them the acetate directly and supplement with 12 to 15% protein rations. Eat said cow and milk his mommy. In theory you could grow rice or corn or wheat directly in trays hydroponic style stacked up in vertical density that would make the matrix pox people proud since no light is needed only water , air and liquid acetate plus minerals in the water which interestingly enough you can use seasalt directly as your mineral source diluted in a hydroponic set up lots of good research and data on sea salt hydroponics. The most efficiency obviously is to skip the multicellular organisms and do direct single cell to end user if one doesn’t care about aesthetics or taste only are biological needs you know like the military.

Yup I went there too. You very easily could make human kibble like rations with fermentation technology we already use to make beer, hooch and gasohol. One normal ethanol fuel producing size distillery would easily feed a few million peasants human kibble as a complete daily ration. Some real Matrix style stacked pod people stuff cram millions into mega high rises right next door to the fermenter tank food mills why so you can use the wastes from the human beehive to grow more products duh such as black soldier fly larvae which have a boner for human wastes and are 60% protein and 20% lipids reduce , reuse , recycle baby! Not sure what all these humans are going to produce for the umbrella Corp since Google’s AI will make them irrelevant in manufacturing, and most other white collar work too. Maybe organs for the rich to harvest like the island, but 3D cellular printer and organ cloning tech will make keeping a human host alive a d feed more expensive anyway. Hum so much dystopia so little time.
