My cousin was the Mob undertaker. He would show a guy in a brand new suit but bury him an old one. He used the same suit all the time for show. My father used to take me to meet some of the mob bosses. I was only 10 at the time. One retired boss loved goldfish. Their bars were dark and scary, gave me the creeps.

James Conn always came off as an arrogant dick With anger management problems. Never much cared for the guy.
When we went to college, if we had any trouble traveling (weather,etc.,missed connections)all we had to do was call a number.
My hometown had a small but distinctive Italian community. One of the older ladies recalled when her dad died, all these black Cadillacs from Chicago showed up for the funeral. The “company” made a deal with her dad, to help him immigrate from Italy, in exchange for some future favor that might or might not ever be called in. It never was, but they remembered him. That must have been a very interesting funeral dinner.
I remember reading that Lansky had met “Lucky” Luciano when they were both youngsters. Seems Lansky taught Luciano about earning and Luciano kept others from beating up the smaller Lansky.
Maybe true.... maybe not.
But Lansky DID know finances. Without Lansky Luciano would have never been able to modernize the mob.

She was the Vegas headliner for the opening of the mob owned The Flamingo on the strip
My grandfather was a “mob” doctor while he was doing his residency in Kansas City around 1930. He would get a call at the hospital that there was a gunshot victim that needed treatment and if he came to the location, he would be paid in cash for the work.
He made a good living for a while doing that. As long as he kept quiet, he got a lot of business.
