Sounds about right. I split my career between engineering and teaching, supposed to teach physics and chem, but math teachers were where the jobs were. Always included comp sci in my classes, because of my background. I loved to divert into discussions about the silicon valley computer businesses. The students seemed to like knowing where the high tech jobs were. But no off topic subjects like this thread is about.
In fact, in industry I was also selected to teach the aspects of management that my company felt to be essential. (How to make business decisions — how to trouble shoot a system Etc.) Again, did not delve into sexual harassment and such, but the company did have those classes too, only they brought in outsiders to do those required add ons.
The thing is, these make sense with classes of adults. I am not sure when it needs to be taught in earlier grades, but these days it is introduced too soon in my opinion.
I took the calculus courses during summer breaks. The teacher didn’t have a lot of time to chit chat. The engineering tech classes I took at the university did offer some career related chit chat.
You are correct. However, is math racist, sexist and homophobic? I’m not sure but when I need to make sure of the load of a wall in construction, I don’t care if the person is transgender, homosexual, black, I just want the walls to hold up when the roof gets put on. If a wall fails, the family will get hurt...
