Even *seeing* pictures like that makes my stomach flip. Other people treat a multi-hundred foot drop like they’re dangling their legs off the back porch.
Not an infrequent occurrence
A year from now this story will be on Oxygen, and the wife did it.
Trust the mules.
Dying’ on the edge, in this case
Took a rock climbing course.
The first statement was:
A six foot fall WILL kill you.
Every year...every year. Lots more than one or two go over the edge each year.
They just dont advertise it like this one.
Years ago there was one went over the edge at the Little Colorado River Canyon. The body was left and the family had to hire professionals to go get it.
BTW, the Little Colorado River Gorge is way better IMO.
I also like the Sycamore Canyon from the spot I go to which takes someone with knowledge of the roads to get there. That one burned a couple years ago..
It is an awful thing. Our sympathies to the family.
Spoke with a ranger on the South Rim, circa 1993, who told us the average visitor spends seventeen minutes looking at the canyon then they’re gone. Can’t get my head around that.
I feel dizzy just looking at that photo.
When I went to the Grand Canyon, I spent all of the first day walking the rim trail, somewhere between 7-10 miles. Then I spent the second day hiking the main trail down to the bottom...and then back up. People who only spend 17 minutes looking at something like the Grand Canyon should have just stayed the hell home and watched some TV special about it instead.
"Never get off the trail. Absolutely freakin' right."
Falling 199 feet is nothing. It’s going splat right after that last foot.
I recently walked to the bottom of the GC and back up the Bright Angel Trail on my treadmill using an I-fit program. Now I don’t have to do it in real life.
We climbed down the Kaibab trail, camped overnight at Phantom Ranch, and then climbed out the next day using Bright Angel trail.
One of my favorite hikes of all time.
It took significantly longer than 17 minutes.
Darwin award nominations are still open.

A how not to guide...
I posted a link to that before I saw your post. Looks like it is still on sale.
I looked at a copy at a Half Price Books once, but did not buy it.
