Ronald Reagan had something to say about that...
But McCarthy had nothing whatsoever to do with HUAC (as he was in the Senate) and had nothing to do with people in the entertainment industry who were blacklisted.
"McCarthyism" is a phrase that is thrown around a lot by people who don't have any idea what they are talking about. (I assume you are using "McCarthyist" as shorthand to describe that period, which a lot of people do, even as offensive as it is, so I do not direct this criticism directly at you)
McCarthy had little interest in what people were saying.
McCarthy was concerned that people who were ideologically aligned with Communists (an evil and bloodthirsty ideology dedicated to the overthrow governments that were non-Communist such as the United States) should NOT be working in sensitive government positions such as the State Department, Defense Industries, or ANYWHERE else that could have a bearing on our national security.
And history has shown that McCarthy was spot on.
The people he went after were people who were not just members of the American Communist Party or sympathizers of them, but who worked in sensitive positions in the government, and in MANY cases were actively spying or passing information to the Soviet Union.
McCarthy knew of what he spoke, and the years have proven him right, especially with the fall of the Soviet Union and the revelations of the Venona decryptions.
Joseph McCarthy was an American Hero and should have been treated as such, making Communism as disreputable as he did for at least 20 years.
Instead, our country let the Left slander him and destroy him, salting the ground of his reputation to ensure he would be soiled forever, making "McCarthyism" an evil malediction to be aimed at anyone who dares call out the Left.
You’ve come far, pilgrim.
Well said.
McCarthy was a hero.

“Witness,” by Whittaker Chambers, published in 1952, ia a beautifully written memoir, which is truly must read for anyone interested in the details of Communist infiltration in the U.S., going way back to the first half of the 20th century. One can also choose an audio version. This is primary source documentation for anyone who wants to understand how the Communist agenda became infused into Western society at the highest levels. Readily available new and used on Ebay, Amazon and from libraries.
I got interested in McCarthy about 20 years ago...before that, I was like a lot of people:
“Yeah. McCarthy was a bad man.”
That is what I was always told. But when I read Ann Coulter’s book (Treason or Slander, cannot remember which one it was now) her version of the famous “Have you no sense of decency?” hearing with Joseph Welch.
Her version was completely what 180 degrees different from what I had learned in school, had read in books, and had heard in the media.
I had one of those “Someone is lying here” moments, so...I downloaded the transcripts from the hearing, and Ann Coulter’s “version” was not only the ‘most’ accurate, it was spot on.
And I had read Whittaker Chambers’ book “Witness”, so the methods of the Communists in infiltrating this government, and the actions of the American Left and Media in attacking Chambers, well, that spurred me to more.
The best book on this subject, by far, is “Blacklisted By History” by M. Stanton Evans. It is without peer.
And the more I read, the more convinced that our teachers, our textbooks, and the Media fed Americans a load of BS. It was very disillusioning for me.
