I shouldn’t have rushed my response. You were asking about the country and I responded by talking about the people. Apologies. No. Canada has no alternate name that I’m aware of. However, if Trudeau’s censorship policies and laws are all passed, it may be appropriate to start calling us Can’t-ada.

No problem! I had been wondering about the use of the word Canucks for Canadians (as I explained in my reply in post #2,090), anyway. So, I appreciate that. I guess if the election process isn't repaired and President Trump doesn't win next time, we can be called American'ts. :/

I wasn’t sure if Canucks was considered derogatory or not. Years and years ago, I was in a department that took orders from the US as well as different countries. Most were sent in by fax, but some still made phone calls to place orders. I once got a call from a guy in Newfoundland. He called himself a “goofy Newfie”. LOL
____________________________________________________

Canucks is not derogatory at all. I’m surprised you could understand the “goofy Newfie”. I was born in Gander, Newfoundland, and I know that the accent and dialect can make it nearly impossible to understand them. Here’s a 9 minute Newfie language lesson that you may find amusing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqLuIXwsLDw

And a 3-minute fun ‘tutorial’ on phrasing -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHB32ll7Ce8

The Broadway stage play “Come From Away” chronicled the treatment of “the plane people” when 6700 passengers “from away” were grounded in Gander, Nfld., on September 11, 2001. The actors did a good job of capturing the locals’ speech and customs. As a group, there are no better people on the planet than Newfoundlanders, in my humble opinion. This short USA Today article from 2017 summarizes the 5 days the plane people spent in Gander:

Well I don’t see anybody demanding the Vancouver Canucks NHL team change their name.

I was always curious as to where the “habs” (Montreal) came from...
_________________________________________________

We think the “Habs” nickname was the result of an error in 1924. The first man to refer to the team as the Habs was Tex Rickard, the founder of the National Hockey League and the owner of Madison Square Garden. Rickard apparently told a reporter that the “H” in the logo on the Canadiens’ jerseys stood for habitants, which wasn’t true. The C-wrapped-around-H logo stood for the hockey team’s official name, le Club de Hockey Canadien. The “H” stood for “hockey”, but Habs stuck. They’re still referred to as the Habs even today.

Habs is short for “Les Habitants”....”The Inhabitants”.

I heard the Ch in the middle of the rink stood for “centre hice”.

Seriously, I’ve also heard it refers to Habitants, which I believe relates to more French Canadian navel gazing at their collective past. Dunno if it’s true. They need to be reminded of the Plains of Abraham.

I don’t recall having any problems understanding him. He spoke English plainly enough. (It was around 30 years ago, and I mostly just remember the “goofy Newfie” part.) Oh my! I would have remembered if he’d spoken anything like in the 9-minute Newfie lesson! 😮 Thanks for the links!

Haha! I know less about hockey and hockey teams than I do most other sports...which is very little to begin with. But if I'd been aware of the team's name, that would have clued me in that Canucks is A-OK! :)

I think we were founded as One Dominion Under the Name of Canada, later shortened to Canada.

I remember it as the Dominion of Canada.

I remember it being short for "habitants", French for "people who live there", referring to the original settlers. The internet tells me I'm wrong.

I have baked a similar bread covered for years. Got a large spice container at Costco of everything bagel seasonings in a shaker container. Before putting the bread in the oven I lightly baste the loaf with about a tablespoon of water and then sprinkle on the toppings. Excellent! Many places sell this as I just took a look on Google.

My Dr tried to get me to take statins. That lasted 2 days. At a later point I was told to take cranberry for UTIs. Since then my cholesterol has dropped to normal range. If you want cranberry get Theracran. It is a consistent amount, unlike over the counter stuff.

https://www.westernjournal.com/biden-set-announce-unprecedented-crackdown-gas-powered-vehicles/

Obama once was a master at diverting the attention of the nation. Now there is so much chaos going on at once it's hard to divert attention.

Election cheating also needs cover big time. We see in several states the Dominion machines are still in operation and the big cheat is still doable. Also, the left learned that 10-13% is a better win number than 51-49. So they are cheating big time so no one dares accuse the bogus machines or cheating as the cause.

We also need more tutelage on beating the left at it's own game such as the early vote. It's masterful on the left and often times allows more vote buying near the last few days of voting. We need to concentrate on how the left cheats and either do it better or stop it.

Below, Biden offers Obama's latest diversion, a near banning of gas powered cars. That will never happen. But its a convenient diversion from all the chaos. From bogus law suits on the real president to massive open borders creating a bonanza for left wing criminals funded by the Mexican cartels.

Below a clip of the piece on electric cars replacing gas powere vehicles. Biden Set to Announce an Unprecedented Crackdown on Gas-Powered Vehicles

By Bryan Chai

April 7, 2023 at 8:43am

As America grapples with unprecedented inflation, soaring grocery bills and a deadly school shooting that targeted Christians, President Joe Biden and his administration have opted to focus on gas-powered vehicles.

According to a new report from Reuters, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is preparing to enact “sweeping cuts in vehicle emissions pollution that will push automakers towards a big increase in electric vehicle sales.”

That big push for electric vehicle sales, naturally, means a big decrease in gas-powered vehicle sales.

“Environmental groups and some automakers think the proposal will result in at least 50 percent of the U.S. vehicle fleet by 2030 being electric or plug-in hybrids,” the report notes.

Per a separate Bloomberg report, these momentous announcements are expected to be made on Wednesday in Detroit.

According to the two reports, it does appear that these sweeping changes stop just short of a full-on ban of gas-powered vehicles.

While these moves are being made with “green” and environmental concerns at heart, the move still appears to be ruffling feathers — even among those who are onboard with green initiatives.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a trade group that represents nearly all automakers (including heavy-hitters like Ford and Volkswagen) made it clear that the issue wasn't the move to electric vehicles, the issue was the timing of the move.

“The question isn't whether it can be done, it's how fast can it be done,” the alliance told Reuters.

The main concern with the timing of this move, according to the alliance, is that automakers are worried about improving the current fleet of cars — only for those cars to be all but phased out as electric vehicles become more prominent.

“Every dollar invested in internal combustion technology is a dollar not spent on zero carbon technology,” the alliance added.

Bloomberg also notes that automakers have actually been asking Biden for more time to better prepare for a mass shift to electric vehicles, while electric vehicle manufacturers, like Elon Musk's Tesla, actually want the government to enact even stricter restrictions on gas-powered vehicles.

As it stands, these changes could be sneaking up on Americans far sooner than expected.

Biden's crackdown on gas-powered vehicles could impact vehicles manufactured for model years 2027 through 2032. That's just a few years away.

Per Bloomberg, these sweeping changes will focus on governing “tailpipe emissions of carbon dioxide, smog-forming nitrogen oxide and other pollution from vehicles.”

Biden and his administration have long stated their desire to crack down on gas-powered vehicles, but aside from the above stated concerns from automakers, there's one more rather large group of people that could be concerned: everyday Americans who drive to work.

There are numerous, documented issues with electric vehicles, ranging from the silly to the downright dangerous.

Even attempting to foist these changes on Americans could have an indelibly negative effect on Biden's chances at re-election in 2024 — should he run again.
