In the late 1990’s Yale refused to allow Orthodox Jewish students to opt out of the dorm system and have their own single sex apartment. Yale said living in the mixed gender dorms was an essential part of the Yale College experience. The Jews sued, and lost, and that was the end of the matter.
In 2009, Yale University Press published a book on the controversy relating to the drawing of pictures of Mohammad. It had no illustrations.
Now that the Muslims demand it, Yale not only allows students to get their own single gender apartment off campus — they provide single gender apartments on campus.
I wonder why all these things are happening!
If I understand you correctly we are in disagreement. It isn’t about boy dorm, girl dorm, it’s about various floors being mixed or not. In the past the whole building was a male or female dorm no mixing at all. Which is where I am coming from. Yale is unwilling to be historical.
Single gender dorms will appeal to queers.
The point I am coming from is that if they are willing to compromise with the students with this grievance I think this is a good thing. Maybe some more students will be swayed by the advantages to their schooling by looking at the example and shared stories of the single gender floor students. Maybe the floors will be stacked with something like three floors of men and three floors of women and then grow getting back to the historical norm you are advocating.
