If he didn’t kill them on that trip, he would have killed them on some other trip. JFK, Jr wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. I think there were probably really good reasons why Jacquiline Kennedy didn’t want Jr to take flying lessons.

Jack Kennedy was similarly reckless. With access to JFK's medical records, recent biographers have marveled at his poor health and limited prospects of survival to old age. These apparently inspired JFK to risk taking that made his private life a chaotic mess of compulsive womanizing but spurred him on in his political career.
Was JFK, Jr.'s recklessness due to emulating a father whom he barely knew? Was it due to a Kennedy family philosophy passed on from Joe Kennedy, Sr., the family's ruthless and ambitious founding patriarch? Or was JFK, Jr. just another handsome, wealthy celebrity without the ordinary sense to avoid lethal dangers to himself and those with him? All of the above, I imagine.
