That’s the big one. The neighbor kids don’t get together as much now.

Something I have observed, living in a community that consists mainly of families from India, is that the kids on the street do get out and play together.

Two problems.

1) Like we now have participants awards for everything, we set expectations (for kids and the parent alike) too high for what used to be just casual social events. Invite your close friends and just have fun. Don’t need clowns, bounce houses, and other nonsense. You try to include all that and now success depends on others showing up, never mind they all have their own families and lives, and aren’t invested in your ‘princess’ the way you are.

2) Others have their own lives, their own family plans, and aren’t obligated to go out and spend money for every birthday every kid in the neighborhood (or school room) has. Related to this, if you dont have normal friendly relationships with your neighbors, then dont expect them to show up for your ‘special’ occasions.

Or, a third possibility, your kids a brat and noboby likes her.

Grew up in a big Irish Catholic family. We had parties. They were called chores. No friends showed up.

Kids are not being raised as social as we were.

My granddaughter has a few friends in her kindergarten class, but they rarely go to each other’s homes. This past weekend she went to her first birthday party. The after report was that 10 little girls were invited. Seven RSVP’ed. Four showed.

Kid’s generally don’t go to other kid’s homes as much. They communicate “virtually” once they are teenagers...don’t even talk to be about them dating these days...it is a mess.

Possibly one cause is that many moms are forced to work outside the home these days, and young children need Mom or Dad to get to these types of private parties.

I don't think that a lot of parents would shop their preschoolers out to a pickup and deliver baby sitting service.

Maybe the other parents didn’t want their kids exposed to Disney. But they should have let the hostess know they weren’t coming.

People these days tend not to have friends. They have “connections” on social media. Those people don’t care about you.

We're all disconnected from each other. So there's a lack of community. Notable exceptions? Religious organizations. If you're a Mormon, you're not going to have this problem.

So why is no one showing up? Are people just rude?

They read the news and learn that parties attract shooters.

These stories are so weird. Why even put in the newspaper?

Its the Daily Mail.

If its not "Russian General's Head Crushed Between Angry Ukrainian Hooker's Thighs" then its stories about children's birthday parties or pitbulls biting grandmothers.

You left out the Forth possibility. The mother is a brat and nobody likes her.

AS for number 2 there is always the Dollar Tree to get a gift. The girl is 3 so some crayons?

Families out in restaurants don’t talk either. They all text people who aren’t there.

In our family a birthday party for a 3 year old was just family members. A 3 year old does not have close friends.

Now that is really sad. They send them to school by age 4 and they are even more less social.

Kids need to do what my mom always told us when she was upset with us: “GO OUT SIDE AND PLAY!!”

So why is no one showing up?

The story reads to me like the party was for the mother's ego. not the kid's benefit. There was way too much "I did all of this and now I feel bad" and not much of how did the kid take it?

Best comment:

What a load of rubbish. Clearly filmed before the party started, for sympathy and gifts from the Amazon link she conveniently posted on her page....

When my daughter was in first grade, she stood up on show and tell day and invited her whole class to her birthday party. Almost all of them came. Fortunately, her teacher let me know ahead of time.
