I have lately become a lot more admiring of H.L. Mencken.
No one has mentioned the “Father of the Constitution”, James Madison. In addition to many of the names already listed, he ranks among the greatest Americans.
We would never have had the United States without George Washington.
He is so far in first place that he is laps around any choice for number 2.
I’m partial to John Leland of Virginia. He cut a deal with Madison that most likely led to us NOT having a “state church”.
My favorite Americans are Ben Carson and Franklin Graham.

Lincoln is not on my list at all. He made very moving speeches that seduced a lot of people, but ultimately, he used brutal military force to quash dissent - thereby missing the whole point of “by the people”.
