I think saltwater would have rotted a carbon steel or even a 400 series stainless. It would have to be a 300 series stainless or an exotic not to rust. I am just a humble engineer, not a metallurgist.

It’s a spent rocket engine. The seam where the explosive bolts go where the next stage attaches is a dead giveaway.

Has anyone thought to take the picture and do a picture search on it to see if the internet has a match?
