Oh if it were just that simple. There are a number of reasons for obesity besides sugar consumption. The first and obvious is that if a person uses more calories than they intake, they will lose or maintain weight. But there are a number possibilities.

The world around us influences our ability to maintain a healthy weight. Not having area parks, sidewalks, and affordable gyms makes it hard for people to be physically active. Oversized food portions increase Americans’ calorie intake, making even more physical activity necessary to maintain a healthy weight. Some people don’t have access to supermarkets that sell affordable healthy foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables.

Certain medicines also may cause weight gain, including some corticosteroids, antidepressants, and seizure medicines.

Research shows that genetics plays a role in obesity. Genes can directly cause obesity in diseases like Prader-Willi syndrome and diabetes I or II.

Some hormone problems may cause overweight and obesity, such as underactive thyroid, Cushing syndrome and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Some people eat more than usual when they are bored, angry, upset, or stressed.

Studies also have found that the less people sleep, the more likely they are to have overweight or obesity. This is partly because hormones that are released during sleep help control appetite and the body’s use of energy.

Our bodies are an incredibly complex machine. And more can go wrong than right. And each person has to find their right. But it takes a lot of wrong to do so. So they invented Pepto and jogging shoes to watch the back.

Do not try this at home but the last time I drank Mountain Dew was when my college roommate and I mixed it with Southern Comfort because there was no Sprite in the drink machine. I have never been so sick in my life. To this day I cannot look at a bottle of Southern Comfort or a can of Mountain Dew. 😣

There is a lot of truth in this short section of your post, based on my experience. I have on more than one occasion, gone on a "sleep diet" and been astonished at how much weight I lost. I distinctly remember losing up to 5 pounds in a single night, several times, when I actually slept for 10+ hours, as part of a routine of sleeping that much each night.

I would weigh myself before bed, and then when I woke up, and have not gone to the restroom in between the measurements, and on certain nights see these huge losses in weight. Gut size can also reduce itself a lot when the body is kept horizontally for longer periods each day. Again in my experience.

De Novo Lipogenesis, basically fat from excess carbs, is actually a very small contributor to obesity. To become fat, eat fat!

De novo lipogenesis during controlled overfeeding with sucrose or glucose in lean and obese women

Conclusion: De novo lipogenesis increases after overfeeding with glucose and sucrose to the same extent in lean and obese women but does not contribute greatly to total fat balance.

Refined sugars like glucose are extremely bad in any excess. There is research however indicating that HFCS poses an additional or synergistic issue. Sometimes you’ll hear people say things like “sugar is sugar”. They might be similar from a chemical standpoint, though not the way the body tries to deal with it.

Anyone who is overweight or morbidly obese almost certainly has some degree of non-alcoholic fatty liver. Unlike glucose, which can be utilized by practically every cell in the body, Fructose is only metabolized in the liver. While it is difficult to consume too much fructose by eating fresh fruit, juices might cause issues. So much for fruit juices being “healthier” than Soda!

Almost all sodas use Corn Syrup for sweetening. And this guy was drinking a 12 pack a day. The beauty of the human body, if he quits that shit and loses the fat, his organs will recover including the liver, blood pressure will come down, blood lipid parameters fall into line, blood sugar, he’ll be able to wipe his again, all kinds of health benefits.

I’m constantly hearing about how the French guzzle butter by the pound but are charmingly svelte, but when I go to France I can’t help but notice that the nicotine consumption particularly among women is approximately quadruple what it is in the U.S. Cigarettes are not only an appetite suppressant but nicotine is also a metabolism accelerant.

Also, it’s a fact that most Europeans walk more than the average American as the typical lifestyle of commuting/shopping is less car-oriented.

I’m not saying sugar consumption differences play zero role, but I suspect sugar’s role isn’t as great as you think.

What? Around 600 carbs?

I have to assume this person was ingesting other food stuffs as well....

And lets not even get into the caffein effects.

So yea, going off of that should have a major impact
