My oldest brother is really, really smart. Back in the day we we did not have much money. We found golf clubs at garage sales, and golf balls in the fields next to golf courses. There was a small, 9 hole course nearby. We would save up and play when possible. My brother started thinking about just how a sand wedge club functions. He found an old gardening hoe. He sawed off the long wooden handle to the length of a golf club. The next time he ended up in a sand trap near the hole, he took out the hoe/sand wedge. He hit the sand just behind the ball, and the ball flew, rolled near the hole. You could hear the old timers nearby ‘what the hell?’ ‘did you see that?’ etc.

Nope, not “pure luck.” That’s a fundamentally sound golf swing that gives the shot a chance to go in. Some luck is involved in MAKING the shot, as you said, but the player’s goal is to get onto the green which he did. So some luck involved but making that shot would never be possible by a beginner. That would be pure luck.
