Good observations.
Not sure I agree with the “pop” version of the word tribe, which seemed to come about during the hippie era, in favor of the traditional biological sense of a large association of clans claiming a geographic location—a genetic subgroup with their own ethos. The actual situation on the ground in Rwanda was incredibly tragic, with two tribes who had intermingled for centuries, and were not having a problem until the government interfered and started to divide them and incite hatred.
What did the Rwandan government actually do to interfere? I have never gotten a good explanation!
I don’t know, so I looked it up, racism vs. tribalism. I am not sure I have ever looked up “tribalism” in my life. And I sure as hell am not going back to school to have some Leftist professor indoctrinate me.
I always felt that tribe is just a word that ties groups of people together, and can be used in positive or negative ways., the caveat being that you have to WANT to be part of that tribe to be a member. I don’t think one must be an indigenous person to be part of a given tribe.
Maybe part of racism is the shoe-horning of someone into a “Tribe” of some kind as a way to deny them their individualism (and doing it out of ideological reasons)
That said, I understand your concern of the shifting meaning of “Tribe” over the years. THAT is what they do.
Is that all together on a web page that I can steer folks to?
I have black friends that I worked with and still keep up with. They are good standard people but do have some delusions about Africa.
Thanks ! similar to what I’ve heard.
Tribalism is a good word to describe when the powers that be herd us all into identity groups and people start being proud of being labeled and segregated.
Sad.
Right..racial tensions were about 50 years in rear view mirror until Obama stirred it up all over again for political purposes.
In my area these fights are often religion based.
And people from the islands (Jamaican, Haitian, etc)
