Just watched a documentary on the great Beach Boys album “Pet Sounds”.
Later they met the Beatles and they all listened to Pet Sounds together......after, John Lennon declared “God Only Knows” was “the perfect song”......I’d surely agree with that.

“In My Room” was very creative. It came from beatings Wilson received in the living room. Hid father musta been a winner.
I was jealous as he had his own room.
His wife recently passed.

There’s a theory out there that Brian essentially faked his late ‘64 “breakdown’ because he was tired of touring and live performances and just wanted to stay home and make records in the studio. Hard to know the truth with such a complex character.
There’s a funny story told by a lawyer who worked with the Beach Boys in the ‘70s. There was a big meeting of the band and management and lawyers, and some issue came up for a vote. Meanwhile Brian was sprawled out on a conference table taking a nap. Attempts to snap him out of his slumber had limited success. Finally, exasperated, someone said, “Brian, if you can hear me, we’re voting on whether or not to do {...whatever...}. If you vote yes, just knock on the table once. If you vote no, knock on the table twice.”
To everyone’s surprise, Brian, still apparently snoozing on the conference table, proceeded to knock on table... three times.

Carol Kaye came up with it and played it. She did that on many songs.
I’ve come to really appreciate just how well-crafted many of those songs of that era were, from the songwriting and the musicianship.
Yes, I couldn’t remember Carols last name. I was amazed how they actually created many of the classics we enjoy today

Caroline No it’s just one of many songs that few people I’ve ever heard, which are as poignant as anything the Beatles ever did. About 12 years ago Wilson put together some musicians together and performed a lot of the songs from Smiley smile. Heroes and villains, another Wilson song, is basically an ode to the old west. It tells the tale of a cowboy, who lived his life amongst the heroes and villains. His live version on YouTube is a masterpiece of musicianship.
Your mistake is thinking it is an either/or thing. He fried his noodle 6 ways to Sunday on Acid. Among other recreational pharmaceuticals. Today, 50 years later he has Dementia on top of it.

Yes- a Danelectro 6 string bass Campbell played the lead break. Wonder where that bass is now, just a Danelectro from that era is worth plenty for the tone. Had one for a long time- and was glad to see Mark Knopfler playing the same model (black/white super long neck and lipstick pickup (with some tweaking). Powerful sound back then through tube amp.
Never should have sold it. Knopfler sold at Christies his ‘83 1959 remake Les Paul end of January. for £470K!!

At the time of his 16th birthday on June 20, 1958, Brian Wilson shared a bedroom with his brothers, Dennis and Carl—aged 13 and 11, respectively—in their family home in Hawthorne. He had watched his father Murry Wilson play piano, and had listened intently to the harmonies of vocal groups such as the Four Freshmen. After dissecting songs such as "Ivory Tower" and "Good News", Brian would teach family members how to sing the background harmonies. For his birthday that year, Brian received a reel-to-reel tape recorder. He learned how to overdub, using his vocals and those of Carl and their mother. Brian played piano with Carl and David Marks, an eleven-year-old longtime neighbor, playing guitars they had each received as Christmas presents.
So, yeah the process began in the late 50s, but it wasn't until 1961 that the Beach Boys were even formed. but you were close enough. 🙂 👍

Dude, I said the Beach Boys were pre-Beatles, who were late 63/early 64.

There was a (TV?) movie made about The Beach Boys.
In one scene the father is at Capitol Records (in a once very famous building) and sees a cardboard Beatles cutout and gets very upset about The Beatles getting more company interest than The Beach Boys.
Ha! I’m sure the Beatles upset a lot of the early rock ‘n’ rollers, their fans, and their families.
The Beatles were like smart phones to everyone else’s flip phones, or landlines.
