Papyrus was a major enabler of the Roman Empire and, as Henri Pirenne pointed out, the final collapse of the Roman economy in Europe was not the barbarian invasions but the cutting-off of the papyrus supply by the tide of Islam. No papyrus, no way to manage commercial communications and record-keeping. The Renaissance called the the “Dark Ages” because they found so few records. The only alternative for several centuries was parchment, which was scarce and expensive. It was so often scraped down and reused that a word was coined for recycled parchment: palimpsest.

"Willis Carrier: American, refrigerated air."

Nope.

Invented by Dr Gorrie in Florida.

Gorrie's Fridge

John Gorrie was making ice in 1851...64 years before Carrier was even born.
