The men on the Lewis & Clark expedition relished dog meat, having shot and eaten so much elk in the course of their travels that it was coming out of their ears. The Indian tribes with whom they stayed (e.g., the Mandans, the Shoshone) apparently had dogs and sold them some.
What can you say? Taste change. I mean, I'd never eat dog myself, but, then again, I'm a vegetarian anyway.
The breed of dog eaten is the chow breed and it’s name in Chinese literally is Chow or food. Koreans are ethnically closer to Chinese than any other Asians so it’s little surprise they eat chow as well. I have had it both as stew and as skewers in Korea and here in the USA at a Vietnamese New Year’s party. It’s better than raccoon or squirrel meat by far. It’s closest to black bear meat in taste, color and texture.
