This sounds like standard operating procedure (with slight variations) in every well-run precinct . . . which makes me all the more suspicious. This happened in an unidentified precinct of suburban Columbus, not all that different from suburban Pittsburgh (my case) or DC (your case).

A missing precinct, if procedures such as ours as described are followed, is simply not possible. Certainly not for more than a couple of hours or so.

I have to say my experience was that the potential for security lapses was greater when we moved to electronic voting machines.

When I first worked there, we used the Shouptronic 1242 voting machines. They had quite a few areas which could be protected by numbered metal security bands and tags.

The new voting machines they switched to about 15 years ago were the touch screen enabled models running Windows XP embedded. They used Wi-Fi to communicate with one machine designated as a master to verify 0 prior to polls opening and synchronize vote totals after the polls closed. My gut feeling was there were some security issues with them but this was when the electronic machines were first appearing in voting places.

The Shouptronics printed out paper tapes from all machines and one machine was used to totalize all votes and print out a totalized tape. All paper records were affixed to the official forms and signed. The electronic machines just "phoned home" to transmit their results.

Of course even the old mechanical machines were able to be set to generate fraudulent totals. I read many years ago of a NJ precinct where the machines were tampered with to file down the teeth used for advancing the counter so that the Democrat advanced on every vote while any challenger had fewer counted votes compared to those actually cast.

According to NY Times today, Balderson only ahead by a little over 1,000 votes with 2 or 3 thousand “provisional” votes still to be counted. So, yes, the fix is in.

Umm...could be. Let’s do the math:

From the article:

“Prior to the discovery, Republican Troy Balderson led Democrat Danny O’Connor by more than 1,700 votes. With the 588 votes included, the margin narrows to 1,564, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.”

1700 - 1564 = 136 votes
588/2 = 294 (50/50 split would produce no change in the lead)
294 + 136 = 430
430/588 = 0.7312 or 73%

Not 90% but just shy of 3/4ths of the votes were for O”Conner. How does this square with historic voting patterns for this precinct?

Not much of a change if this was the final tally.

BUT...

Will the race now be close enough to trigger an automatic recount? That may be what the Democrats are angling for: recount all the ballots so they can “discover” even more uncounted votes for their candidate.
