"Haaser said her very public display of protest in the form of a kiss was part of an English class assignment that required students to perform a "non-conformist" act." Somewhere, on some radio station, the song "Stupid Girls" was playing.

"End homophobia," eh? Hm... homophobia is "fear of homosexuality" (I guess). What's the official word for "Just bored to death with homosexuality?"

Yeah, things have changed since I was in high school too. For instance, in English class we read Shakespeare and Beowulf and Yeats... I don't remember being told to be a nonconformist. I remember memorizing "Tiger, tiger, burning bright, in the forest of the night, what immortal hand or eye dare frame thy fearful symmetry...."
Which, of course, was better than having to stand on a lunch table and kiss a member of the same sex. God knows, the food was bad enough. This kind of dessert would have finished me off.

"I had not known this would be the consequence, but I would have done it anyway," Haaser said OK, then shut up about it now.

In most schools a twelve second kiss atop a lunchroom table between a boy and a girl would result in suspension. Why should it be any different if the kiss is between two girls?

If that were the case in my high school, a good chunk of the students would've been disciplined on a regular basis. And then the issue would have gone away. Funny how most kids are OK with rules like that.
My protest in H.S. was to do a four wheel drive burnout on the lawn. Much like the girl who wants to make out with whatever she sees in the lunch room, I was simply protesting wanting, Tibet to be free. I too was wrongly disciplined. Stupid rules...

I wonder if the "teacher" ever takes the time to teach these kids English. I'm betting not.

Stephanie Haaser, a junior at River Hill High School, says she jumped on a table during lunch and yelled "end homophobia now" Why do gays always think people are afraid of them or that people have a phobia about gays?

Why do gays always think people are afraid of them or that people have a phobia about gays?Because accepting that people just think it's disgusting and don't want to be bothered by it would be too humiliating. Imagine building your life and self-image around a perversion, and then people just want you to shut up about it ...

Outside of an assignment accompanying a discussion of the works of Thoreau, but back in the ancient days when I went to scholl, that class was called English lit, "English" was closer to grammar, etc.Yes. In my era, we had to memorize adverbs, diagram sentences, and complete sentences witht the least use of pronouns.
Sean Hannity should have studied "English." When he gets on a roll, he switches dialogue from two individuals, using the word "he" (which "he"?), and I have to decipher what the hell he's trying to say.
I have to admit, that at my age, my grammar is less than sharp as it was 50 years ago.
Must be the mental English pollution from newspapers, radio, tv.... basically, the media.

"Haaser said her very public display of protest in the form of a kiss was part of an English class assignment that required students to perform a "non-conformist" act." That hardly qualifies as a non-conformist act. Saying something like, Global warming is junk science. There is no such thing, would be. Doubt, though, that she or anyone in her school would be brave enough to utter it.

Let's see, does the term "moronic" or "idiotic" or "just plain stupid" come to mind when describing this act?

I see Britney and Madonna in the keywords, but I didn't see it mentioned among the posts.
Looking at the little girl, the affect and demeanor captured in the photo, I think it is extrememly likely that this is a "Thank you, Britney!" moment.
"WE HATE YOU... MEME!"
