But how many fall out into the ocean before arriving here?

A typical preflight walk around requires an inspection of the tires and wheel well equipment for major oil leaks, etc. I believe some of these wheel well riders get smashed into a tight spot the first time the landing gear retracts and they just may stick there for awhile until found.

Maybe the security or ground crews at JFK do a better inspection than other places, may be the reason they get found there. The wheel wells I've been in are way to small for my style of flying. Plus the restroom facilities are also lacking in features, unless your a dog that loves to pizz on the tires.

Jump-seating on a cargo plane beats a wheel well any day of the week. Unless your poor as a cockroach and don't know nothing about freezing to death, or the lack of oxygen at altitude. These people are much to stupid to even consider carrying a bomb. They just want to come to the USA.
