My grandmother-in-law would swing her hearing aid over food served to her. If it swung clockwise, it meant the food was okay. If it swung counter clockwise, it meant she was "allergic" to it. I think she made it swing whatever way she wanted it to, depending on whether she wanted to eat it or not.

Hey, I've got no problem with it as long as there is room for two color TVs (the one that works sitting on top of the one that doesn't), the family gun rack, Junior's beer can collection and grandma's favorite recliner....

That is one of the funniest little books I've ever read!

I watched a woman pick up items & swing something over them. It looked like it was something you would see hanging on a keychain.
What you experienced was a deeper layer of the organo-holistic crowd. That was a pendulumn she was swinging over it. If it swings one way that means good, if it swings another way, bad. Some believe you don't need a pendulum, just hold the object in your palm and ask something like "is this good for me?".
Go to an organo-holistic convention and you'll see much more. What you will come to realize is that as you get deeper into that world, it increasingly takes on the trappings of an earth worshipping religion. Makes sense because the organic food store also serves as a watering hole for your local wiccans and assorted pagans. I've known a number of christian folk who got into that and before long were quietly adopting some of these practices.
