Blue with envy. Don't confuse hatred with jealousy when rooting against Duke

Probably said about UCLA quite a few years back.
Krzyzewski and Wooden. Two of the classiest coaches. I would let them coach my son. (or daughter)

This may have something to do with Durham, which despite Duke's presence, is riddled with crime and drug problems and where liberal policies have hardly been successful.
Duke also has a John Kerry like aura of superiority. No earthiness, many metropolitan transplants.
As far as I know they are the best Ivy League team there is. Sad thing is that behind the jock imagine, Duke is a bureaucratic corporation which turns out academics which are contrary to this jock image.
IMHO Duke athletics is a great foil for their liberal academics and with which to hide behind.
Those who hate Duke are hardly dumb and are rightfully contemptuous of a school which holds many in secret contempt.

Go ahead and put me in the category of 'hate Duke'. The media bias for this school is unsurpassed - Dick Vitale and Billy Packer practically have orgasms every time they talk about Duke. Their past success is indeed a determining factor in how they are ranked and seeded in the tourney. They could lose 3 games in a row and still be placed in the top 3 or 5 in the polls - if this happened to another team, they would drop out of the top 10 if not the top 25. This week's broadcast of their 2 games was nothing but 'Chris Duhon' with the injured ribs...the heart of the team...did you know he has injured ribs?...an on and on and while a freshman, they won the championship and 'wouldn't it be nice if they win it when he is a senior'?...and on and on. And one year I distinctly remember their coach (however you spell his last name) at a tournament game (I believe it was the last game for Grant Hill) walking out to center court, bending over, and slapping the floor for attention. Anyone remember that? What the hell is that? Arrogance?

I used to kinda like Duke. I can trace precisely the origins of my hatred. It was exactly 12 years ago, yesterday. My alma mater, the University of Kentucky, was playing them in a basketball game. I seem to recall Duke winning the game. Since then, I have hated them with the fire of a thousand suns. Nothing sweeter than watching UK return the favor in '98, coming from 19 down at the 10:00 mark.
Jealous? I was accepted to their graduate school, but turned them down to go to Penn instead (a REAL Ivy League basketball powerhouse). Boredom? I could watch them finish 2-22 for the next 20 years, and still have fun trampling on the remains.

Duke is hated by those that hate them because of their continued success. Now, many of those haters attribute that success to the fact that they get the best recruits in the country because of their previous success. That is also true. Its not a balanced system and success breads future success. Look at the recruiting crop from any school the year after they win a national championship, its much better than the previous year.
But although Duke is allowed to recruit in a way which mirrors the Yankees payroll, they still don't win 25% of the championships. So there is some parity just in the odds of winning 6 consecutive games in March. But as far as a school goes, basketball notwithstanding, it was outstanding. Not a single liberal indoctrinating professor graced my son's classrooms (unless you want to argue about David Gergen, who didn't prostyletize).

You just can't do a piece defending Duke without mentioning the crappy things their fans do, like throwing bananas at Patrick Ewing.
Well, I guess you can since here it is. Still, the poor behavior of their fans has a lot to do with the disdain others have for Duke.

Heard this line on the practice tee at my golf club (which is way overpopulated with old turtles wearin' them red hats):
"There's an identity problem in the ACC. Virginia and Carolina both want to be Duke, but Maryland just wants to be Virginia."
You say that Duke fans sometimes get out of line. That wouldn't be surprising; most college students do that to some extent. However, I have never read editorials in major newspapers urging a crackdown on vulgar and obscene chants by Duke fans at basketball games. And I don't recall reading about the State Attorney General's office having to address formally the authority of Duke's administration to ban obscene signs and T-shirts. Can't say the same about Maryland, unfortunately. You guys need to clean up your act before criticizing others.

Duke is hated for the same reason that the United States is hated worldwide.

Yeah, but did you ever see the bozo outfits which the Duke fans displayed in Jim O'Brien's honor in the late 60s?

Go Duke!
Mainly because if Duke beats Oklahoma St. in the finals, I'll win the Freeper Bracket Challenge.

Actually I am hoping that Duke beats UConn because OSU matches up much better against Duke.

There is a difference between chanting, "Duck Fuke!" and chanting, "Crack-baby" or "Aids-Baby" to individual players.
BTW, I agree that Maryland needs to crack down on that type of behavior and I do not or did not go to UMD.
To: CollegeRepublican
Sorry. I just assumed from your comments that you were a student at Maryland.

...one of his cousins made the mistake of walking through a mall wearing a Duke T-shirt one day last year. Total strangers yelled at her, screaming out how much they hated the Blue Devils. Total strangers yelled at her because she was wearing a T-shirt that said Duke on it? It sounds like these people are in dire need of counseling.
