Lt. Col. Brennan Byrne, USMC
"... they have two choices: Submit or die,"

I am proud that Col. Byrne is the commander of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines in Iraq!

The Fighting Fifth: The most decorated infantry regiment in the Marine Corps.

This whole "cease-fire" talk was more of a "Had enough yet, YOU MURDEROUS PUKES?!". IMO.

Sounds like the Marines know what the answer will be.

"What is coming is the destruction of anti-coalition forces in Fallujah ... they have two choices: Submit or die," he told reporters."

Lt. Col. Brennan Byrne, USMC.

Maybe the United Nations can issue some resolutions and negotiations can start to get this whole thing solved in a few years.

Don't get too worked up about this cease-fire business. The city is still surrounded, and we are only letting the women and children out. We are still shooting these guys stone-cold dead despite "talks" going on. These guys have no place to go even if we have stopped moving forward temporarily. These guys are NOT getting out unless captured or dead, no matter what "agreement" is made between the IGC and these people.

God bless our brave troops in Iraq and Americans wish them godspeed in their mission to rid Iraq of the terrorists and to secure a free and democratic Iraq.

"What is coming is the destruction of anti-coalition forces in Fallujah ... they have two choices: Submit or die."

Well, we've got the right kind of officers there at least. So far, our politicians have shown the intestinal fortitude to let them do their jobs. I hope they continue to do so if this gets uglier.

It's almost as good as the comment of the commanding officer answering reporters questions regarding the bombing of the mosque: "because we wanted to kill the people in it."

Refreshing!

With respect to the US declaring the cease fires, There are only something like 2000 Marines involved with the Fallujah action. No need to lose marines due to fatigue related mistakes. Let them have a rest every 48 hours or so.

Nearly 60,000 Fallujah residents — about a third of the population — have streamed out of the city over the past two days, a Marine commander said.

A young Marine Reserve Captain spoke to a group in my town about his experiences last month. He served in both Afghanistan and the march to Baghdad. His job was to figure out what to do with the refugees when they attacked Baghdad.

His CO would have him go over alternative plans, day after day and quiz him on the plans. He was told, "Remember, any refugees we take we have to feed and house for the duration." The march to Baghdad went so quickly that they took in exactly ONE refugee.

It is not peacetime anymore. In any war, there is period in which peacetime officers, with their largely political and bureaucratic instincts, are winnowed and purged by the stress of real action, and warriors emerge. I think Col. Byrne has a fine future ahead of him - and that he knows it.
