Keep in mind that the majority of the upper mid level commanders (such as Karpinski) were promoted during the previous administration when PC was the key. Competence didn't seem to be much of a consideration.Diversity and "COO" training (consideration of others).

Given an organization the size of any or all of the various Armed Services micro-management is not really possible. This is what the clamor is. The SecDef managing all the way down to the platoon level? What's wrong with this picture? This is why mid level commanders are so important.

No he's not. He has made some major mistakes. His "transformation" leaves much to be desired.

I stopped reading the AF Times, long ago, THe Army Times is no different. Not worth the price, not worth the trees that die to provide the paper it's printed on, (I'm not a tree hugger) not representative of the opinion's of most Active Duty or retired Military Personnel.

Journalism has gone liberal and the journalist that wind up on the Times, are liberal too. Like their party, their candidate, their brothers and sisters in the rest of the liberal media, their loyalty and agenda is toward socialism. THey want Rummy gone-their readers hold him in high regard.

Army Times Publishing Company is a Gannett subsidiary.

Any further questions?

gannett owns usa today,

as well as many, many u.s. newspapers, for example, the arizona republic (which also calls for rummy to resign).

surprise, surprise!

Get your news from Free Republic. All the so-called news media do these latter days is preach the left-wing gospel. The truth is not in them.

What's more telling is that USA P'tooey/Gannett won't let FReepers even excerpt articles from their publications.

They don't want us to offer rebuttal to their propaganda. What are they afraid of?

The defense contractor here used to have a subscription to the Army Times for all in the building to read. About a yer they asked if anyone really wanted it renewed. Officers, NCO's and civilians all turned it down.

"Army Times is one of four such publications owned by the Gannett Co., and has a circulation of about 250,000."

Boycott the Army Times. Hit their advertisers. E mail Army Times in protest. Ban the Army Times from all exchanges.....it has become subversive to the war we are fighting.

Finally, a media with conservative gonads! Bush should get rid of Rh-DUM-feld...he's made a mess of this war! Underfunded, under-sized, and too Guard/Reserve-dependent, our military is being poorly led, fed, and, that said, no wonder there's too many dead!

I respect your opinion, but I think that you are wrong. He is the FIRST SoD that has had any success in modernizing a Pentagon mired in "old thinking".

I see that the President, Vice President, and most of the military analysts that I trust, are in agreement with me. You have most dim-o-Rats, and "some" here on FR in agreement with you. Let's see.....who works with the SoD daily, and would KNOW what kind of job that he is doing?

I think I will hold to my original opinion. Thank you for sharing your opinion with me.

I respect your opinion also, but do not think you are quite as in the know as you think you are.

I happen to work for a Service (not gonna say which one) and have seen firsthand what happens as "transformation" has been tried.

Some vital weapon systems have been cancelled based on "shazzam" briefings and wrongheaded "top-down" dictats.

Now, our military capability is less than it has been in the past because some of those in "the Building" have sneered at them as being "cold war weapons."

And Rumsfeld has been doing well in trying to reverse that trend. Plus he oversaw the initial Afghanistan and Iraq invasions extremely well. Okay, so he's screwed up a bit in post-war Iraq. We could be doing better than we are, and obviously something illegal happened under his watch, something that is hurting his boss politically.

But the negative things that have happened are cause for a reprimand, as he received, not dismissal. He has done too much good work, and is capable of doing so much more good work, for dismissal to be the proper action.
