I think religious ties are stronger than political ties, but that's MHO ...
How does the UCMJ distinguish between AWOL and desertion? (Our Moslem problem within the ranks continues.)
Arabic?
SRB - Service Record Books - All paper items on soldiers, in this case, they were Marines.
Page 12's are disciplinary actions taken against military personnel. They are recorded on a particular form, and IIRC, it was the "Page 12" entry.
Of course, then (early 1980's) as now, it was recorded electronically in computer files, but the books were sent out when a Marine would deploy, either temporarily or full active again. The SRB includes induction, physical exams, promotions, pay notes, adjustments to records, etc.
Thank you.
For now that is enough for me.
Glad to be of assistance.
Indeed we are supposed to be inclined of innocent until proven guilty. It used to be a standard in America.
If he is innocent, then by all means I hope he is vindicated and treated as a surviving hero. If he made an error in judgement, I hope he did not compound it with a cockamamie story.
I imagine it's going to be a few weeks before we hear the whole thing. dunno
This dude is lucky that one of his fellow 'soldiers' didn't shove him out of the plane over the ocean. Again, an example of how by the book the USA is. If he was a citizen of another country, he wouldn't be out walking among the living.
yes, overwhelmingly, American forces have a long history of being decent to POW's than a lot of other countries.

Looks like he was gone about 18 days. Takes 30 days to court martial for AWOL. Seems like there is a difference in what happens to somebody "during war" and not. Technically, is this war since we haven't declared war? Seems to be tougher during "war."
Thanks to both of you for the feedback.
But what will they discover? It *will* be interesting to hear what comes of all this, that's for sure.
That's my read too ... I think they are telegraphing that they intend to pursue this matter, but I may be wrong ...
but I lean towrds your interpretation as how it seems to be shaping up ...
thanks for the specifics ... I remembered something about the 3 day thing from another serviceman that told me about somebody being AWOL ... this seems to confirm that after 3 days it gets more serious ...
The Marines will stand with him unless he sullies their Honor.
"A Marine is your best friend OR your worst enemy"
We will see.
FRegards....
May not be an either/or thing. What if he went AWOL but can provide valuable information?
If this guy really wanted to desert, why didn't he just stay with his family in Lebanon? Instead he came back voluntarily. Then there's the whole thing about the shootout at the family compound in Lebanon with people who thought they were American collaborators.
We may never know what happened. It wouldn't surprise me if he goes back on duty or gets a discharge, and neither he nor the military ever says anything more about it.
Because the route is more than likely through Syria, which given that he is a U.S. Marine, would require "friends" ... and if that's true, they are going to want to know how he got through Syria ...
and in that case it was a lot shorter trip back to an American base in Iraq than going through Syria to Lebanon. So there would be some 'splaining to do ...
but we will hear more, no doubt ...
Then this Muslim "Marine" -- along with a leftist media -- has better expect the appropriate punishment.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall at Corporal Hassoun's "debriefing" by "psychologists and military intelligence officials," wouldn't you?
