His name is Jim Tooley (Director of USA men and women's basketball). Many a political obstacle in his way in the last year especially with Kobe's legal problems...But I agree with the majority, college kids are much more fun to watch and appear to still love to play.

There should be a amatuer or two playing and a correct mix of pros if they are the level of play now in the Olympics.

Maybe if Iverson learned how to speak so you could understand him we could appreciate his Georgetown edcuation a little more. Every time I watch his interviews on Philly TV I cannot believe he graduated from 8th grade.

This is the hoops equivalent of the "Miracle on Ice" in reverse. If you get what I'm trying to say.......

Not just beaten, but humiliated. Hung out to dry. And by Puerto Rico, no less.

As the old adage goes, "a champion team will beat a team of champions any day". Duncan, Iverson, James and Anthony are all outstanding players but as a group, they look like they've just been thrown together for a pickup game. Which is basically what has happened.

Jordan and Bird's team in '92 never broke a sweat and nobody got within 25 points of them. In 12 years we've come to this. Unthinkable back then but it goes to show how the mighty and seemingly invincible can fall.

A metaphor for the US as a country, to ponder on.

Of interest, papers report Iverson was fined for leaving his Rolls for a week in a handicapped spot while he travelled.

Oh please - when has Iverson ever been called for travelling?

Football has the same anti-role-models as the NBA has.

Good points. I was only half-serious. I despise pro basketball, and love college hoops.

Saw Iverson shooting airballs from 3 point land all second half. These clowns don't have a clue of what it means to play as a team.
\\\\

Why is Iverson team captain? I would have thought Tim Duncan to be a better choice.

Probably because Iverson and his agent made it a condition of his playing on the team. What gets me is why he was even asked to play in the first place.

They sucked big time. Team USA wasn't worth its multimillion megastar players' salaries.

i hate to hear you say that. these players gave up a lot to go play for the USA this summer when many others had better things to do such as sit around and count how much money they have. They deserve your support because they have USA on their jersey and I am ashamed that you would cheer against them.

I believe your metaphor suggestion to be right on. We've
become a nation of blowhards now living vicariously and
parasitically off the real accomplishments of a very few. Whether it's a ball game, a business deal or the Olympics, it's packaged and hyped to sell the digestible, profitable fluff and this country, by and large, has grown too fat and too lazy to care about what's really beneath it all.
