Brit Hume asked his panel if USA should apologize, since they ran with the CBS story without bothering to check it out independently. Barnes said they should apologize, too, but did note they have tried to salvage their reputation by pursuing the phoniness of the CBS story (and their own).

I find it hard to believe his explanation for copying the documents and then burning them. He wanted to make it difficult to trace them. So, it would appear he knew where they came from and wanted to cover up the trail.
I bet he forged them or knows directly who forged them.
